Swedish start-up Candela has opened its first US test drive centre in San Francisco to showcase its electric hydrofoiling boats.
The boat manufacturer has designed the world’s fastest electric craft with the longest range.
Computer-aided hydrofoils lift the hull above the water surface, which means it can fly silently over the water for more than two hours at a cruising speed of 22 knots.
With less water friction, the EV reduces energy usage by 80% when compared to traditional powerboats. This allows for a range 2-3 times longer than any other electric boat on the market.
Candela’s mission is to speed up the transition to fossil fuel-free lakes and oceans by electrifying waterborne transportation.
The test centre will open on April 1 and is located at 1709 Bridgeway, Suite 105B, Sausalito, CA 94965.
Candela now has five test centres around the world, with the other sites in Stockholm, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Italy.
So far, it has had more than 100 orders for its new Candela C-8 daycruiser meaning it is now leading electric boat sales in Europe.
“We’re not just aiming at making the best electric boat. We’re making a vastly better boat than today’s conventional powerboats, hands down – combustion engine or electric,” said Tanguy de Lamotte, chief executive of Candela US.
“Thanks to our hydrofoil technology and our direct-drive C-POD motor, there’s no slamming, no noise, no fumes and very little maintenance. It basically takes away all the bad things with powerboats. Once you’ve tried a Candela, it’s very hard to go back to conventional boating.”
