BEDEO, a leader in electric mobility, has introduced a new chapter in automotive innovation with the launch of its Reborn Electric: Icons programme, spearheaded by the electrification of the classic Land Rover Defender. This marks the company's first venture in retrofitting iconic vehicles with advanced electric technology, including its proprietary in-wheel motor (IWM).
The initiative was announced today, reflecting BEDEO’s strategy to broaden its scope from commercial fleet solutions to the personal vehicle market. The Land Rover Defender, an emblem of rugged automotive heritage, has been transformed into an electric vehicle without compromising its distinctive characteristics. The vehicle is now equipped with a 75-kWh battery that provides an estimated range of 247 km (153 miles) according to the WLTP standards. It features a standard 22 kW on-board charger with an optional upgrade to a 50 kW fast charger that can replenish the battery from zero to full in just 90 minutes.
We do love a good conversion here at WhichEV.
Speaking about the new initiative, Osman Boyner, founder and CEO of BEDEO, highlighted the uniqueness of the project. “The classic car community has warmly embraced the idea of converting their beloved vehicles to run on electric power through EV conversion. However, until now, none have ventured into utilising in-wheel motors to tap into the advantages of weight reduction and engineering enhancements,” he said. Boyner's vision is to marry traditional automotive aesthetics with modern, clean energy technology, preserving the nostalgia of classic cars while aligning with contemporary environmental standards.
The Reborn Electric: Icons programme is not just about electrification; it is about maintaining the integrity and essence of the original vehicles. BEDEO is committed to preserving the vehicle's kerb weight, charm, and driving dynamics, ensuring that the transition to electric power enhances rather than diminishes the vehicle's character. This thoughtful approach aims to meet the needs of car enthusiasts who cherish classic designs but are also conscious of environmental impacts.
BEDEO’s innovative use of IWM technology is pivotal to this process. Developed by group company Protean Electric, this technology integrates the motor directly into the wheel, a method that not only saves space but also significantly reduces the vehicle's weight compared to traditional electric retrofit solutions. This integration allows for the original structure and aesthetics of the vehicle to remain largely untouched, a crucial aspect for classic car conversions.
The company’s expertise in electric mobility extends beyond this project. Over the past decade, BEDEO has made significant strides in the commercial sector, particularly in fleet electrification. Its proprietary technology has been deployed across Europe, covering more than 60 million kilometres since 2009. With the Reborn Electric: Icons programme, BEDEO is leveraging this vast experience to impact the passenger car market.
BEDEO, headquartered in Farnham, UK, operates manufacturing facilities in Turkey and China, supporting its global operations. The firm has established a robust portfolio of more than 300 patents, reflecting its ongoing commitment to innovation and quality in electric vehicle technology. Stellantis, one of the leading OEM groups, has approved BEDEO’s solutions, affirming the company’s role as a crucial player in the shift towards sustainable transportation.
Looking forward, BEDEO plans to expand the Reborn Electric: Icons programme to include other legendary vehicles, enhancing its offerings and cementing its position in the market. This expansion is part of BEDEO’s broader mission to decarbonise the automotive industry through innovative electrification solutions. The company is not only focusing on new vehicle productions but is also providing retrofitting solutions that are respectful of automotive history.
