Extreme E partners with BT Sport for UK broadcasts

Pioneering electric race series Extreme E will be broadcast on BT Sport.

The competition, which is a rally championship that solely uses electric cars, is set to debut in Saudi Arabia on April 4 and fans will be able to follow the live coverage of the event on BT Sport 1 from 11 am.

The teams will battle through five remote locations that are severely threatened by climate change. The competition aims to highlight different issues such as melting ice caps, deforestation, desertification, and rising sea levels.

The electric SUVs competing will be equipped with an incredibly powerful motor that will generate 400 kW (550hp) and be able to propel the vehicle from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.5 seconds.

As we reported, everything is set for the exciting competition to start as the floating headquarters are finally ready. The St. Helena boat has at last completed its extensive refurbishment process. The Extreme E ship has already started sailing towards Saudi Arabia.

A legendary line-up of champion drivers, including Jenson Button, Jamie Chadwick, Molly Taylor, and Carlos Sainz Snr., are set to compete in Extreme E’s first ever race when the series kicks off in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. There will also be  team X44 owned by seven-times Formula one world champion Lewis Hamilton.

In a bid to reduce carbon emissions, numbers at events will be kept to a minimum and this includes spectators, so the only way Extreme E can tell its story is through the screen, making its broadcast product particularly important.

Extreme E recognises that the deal will allow it to further increase the competition exposure and highlight its important cause, according to Ali Russell, Chief Marketing Officer at Extreme E.

“Today’s broadcast agreement with BT Sport marks another major coup for Extreme E,” he said. “Apart from allowing us to bring our thrilling electric race format to even more sports fans in the UK and Ireland, BT Sport provides us with an invaluable platform to share the wider environmental and equality message behind the championship.”
