Hyundai Motor Group’s (HMG) all electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 have been voted the ‘Best Cars of the Year’ for 2021/2022 in a new award given by a judging panel featuring global automotive industry leaders.
The awards were formed to produce an unaffiliated, unique and totally democratic view of the ‘best’ vehicles on offer around the world.
Hyundai’s EVs were chosen for quality, innovation, design and start-of-the-art technology, beating established brands, including the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron.
“We are proud that our first two dedicated battery electric vehicles are jointly honoured as the first-ever Best Cars of the Year,” said Heung Soo Kim, head of the EV business division at Hyundai Motor Group.
“It sends a clear message that not only are both Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 world-class electric vehicles, but also that we are on the right track with our electrification strategy. The world can expect more great EV models from both brands in the coming year.”
Launched in 2021, the IONIQ 5 is the first product from Hyundai’s spun-off electric-only IONIQ brand.
It is based on the Group’s pioneering electric platform called E-GMP, which Kia is also using in its EV6.
What we think adds to the IONIQ 5’s universal appeal is a combination of practical space for passengers and cargo, the fact it is packed with innovative technology and is generally great to drive.
The EV6 has fluid body lines and a more sleek and sporty appearance than its Hyundai sibling. Launched in the second half of 2021, the EV6 features a visionary design, state-of-the-art connected tech user experience, 800V ultra-fast charging and a sporty dynamic performance feel.
The British Motor Show at the Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre from August 18-21 will mark the beginning of the selection, evaluation, test driving and voting process for the Best Car of the Year 2022/23 awards.
