Hyundai unveils ‘category-bending’ SUV SEVEN concept with 300-mile range

Hyundai Motor presented its new sport utility electric vehicle (SUEV) concept SEVEN at the AutoMobility show in LA.

The SEVEN concept provides a glimpse at what the Hyundai IONIQ 7 SUV will look like, opening up a new chapter for the IONIQ brand, Hyundai’s dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) showcase.

Hyundai has labelled the concept as “category-bending”, highlighting its aerodynamically pure silhouette, extended wheelbase, and fluid interior layout as radically different from traditional SUVs powered by internal combustion engines.

It has a single streamlined roofline, signature parametric pixel lights, and wheels that feature integrated active air flaps that deploy or retract depending on brake-cooling or low-drag requirements.

Teased earlier in November, the SEVEN’s interior breaks away from the conventional row-based seating arrangement by introducing furniture-like swivelling lounge chairs and a curved bench seat. This architecture is designed to give passengers greater freedom and comfort on the go.

There is also a universal island console, a smart hub user interface and a built-in mini fridge for chilled refreshments.

“SEVEN dares to break from the beaten path,” said SangYup Lee, senior vice president and head of Hyundai global design.

“SEVEN paves the way forward for what an SUV needs to become in the EV era with a unique aerodynamic pure form that does not compromise on its rugged personality. The interior opens up a new dimension of space that cares for its passenger as a family living space.”

In terms of range, the concept is engineered to achieve a target of over 300 miles. A 350kW charger will charge the vehicle back up from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes.

To ensure a healthy travel experience, SEVEN has a hygiene airflow system, as well as UVC sterilization lights that help clean the living space of bacteria and viruses.

José Muñoz, president and chief executive of Hyundai Motor North America, said: “The SEVEN concept demonstrates Hyundai’s creative vision and advanced technological development for our electrified mobility future. Its innovative interior space, eco-friendly powertrain and cutting-edge safety and convenience technologies reveal an exciting future for Hyundai SUV customers.”
