The size of Ford’s charging network has increased more than threefold in readiness for the first deliveries of the Mustang Mach-E performance SUV.
Ford will be expanding its long-standing business partnership with bp by adding pulse, the biggest public charging network in the UK, to the Ford Pass charging network. The move will increase Ford’s UK network from almost 3,000 charge points to around 9,500.
Ford Mustang Mach-E drivers will be able to use Ford Pass to locate, monitor and pay for charging at over 6,600 charge points in the UK belonging to the new bp pulse network. Also, they will enjoy one year’s free bp pulse access, including a rapidly growing number of high-power 150kW DC chargers, 50kW DC chargers and almost 6,000 7kW AC points.
Also available to Mach-E drivers is one year’s free subscription to Ionity’s ultra-fast chargers at 15 sites in the UK and five in Ireland.
The high-performance Mustang Mach-E, arriving this spring, will be equipped with an extended-range battery and all-wheel drive that will deliver a 0-62mph acceleration in 5.1 seconds and a targeted WLTP pure electric driving range of up to 335 miles. In contrast, the rear-wheel drive Mustang Mach-E will have a 379-mile WLTP range.
As we reported, the new Mach-E will be a very interesting model as it will be equipped with the Intelligent Range feature, which will be able to accurately estimate how many miles the all-electric SUV can drive, helping reduce anxiety about when and where owners can re-charge. The intelligent feature will calculate the range based on past driver behaviour and forecasted weather conditions.
The Mach-E is just the start for Ford as it plans to dominate the all-electric market in the future. The company knows that its ambitious goal is achievable only if its vehicles are supported by a wide and reliable charging infrastructure, according to Mark Harvey, Ford’s European enterprise connectivity director.
“Starting 2021 with the exciting Mustang Mach-E will accelerate Ford’s progress towards electrified engines accounting for more than half of our car sales by the end of 2022,” he said. “Key to this roll-out is the supporting infrastructure available to Ford customers, and today’s announcement demonstrates our commitment to match more electrified vehicles with enough locations to charge them.”
We also reported that Ford plans to bring to the market the high-performance Mustang Mach-E GT, which will deliver a 3.7‑second 0-62 mph acceleration thanks to a 465 PS, all-wheel drive, battery-electric powertrain.
