Nissan’s new all-wheel drive to make EV driving more fun

Nissan intends to launch its next-generation e-4ORCE system, which it claims will offer a much more rewarding drive, and even make outings easier for new electric vehicle drivers. The new all-wheel control technology can provide instant torque to all four wheels and hopes to achieve advanced levels of comfort and balance.

The e-4ORCE (pronounced e-force) is destined to power Nissan’s future electric vehicles. The technology even borrows some torque tech from the racing legend Nissan GT-R. The 4×4 control system can exert 100 per cent electric power into each axle of a vehicle, depending on traction requirements. This promises an exciting new driving experience considering the instantaneous torque that electric vehicles can accurately deliver.

The Japanese manufacturer, which has a long history in racing, claims the technology isn’t only meant for fast cornering and battling understeer. Aside from performance, the system is designed to provide a heightened level of comfort. Ryozo Hiraku, expert leader of Nissan’s powertrain and EV engineering division, explains: “We’re able to control vehicle motion as soon as the brakes are applied, giving all occupants – especially passengers – a stable, smooth ride.”

For example, the system is able to reduce the pitch and dive of the car when it stops, as it is able to manage braking and power to each wheel. The e-4ORCE technology, alongside regenerative braking, manages to keep the cabin steady, which could help those who suffer motion sickness while in stop-and-go traffic.

It also specialises in giving the precise amount of power to each wheel, in order to maintain handling control when on wet or icy roads. If the driver applies too much power, the system will automatically manage power output to ensure control, even on slippery roads.

It’s important to note that Nissan’s technology is not a quad-motor system like the one promised for Rivian vehicles that provides a separate motor to each wheel. The downsides of this system are that a separate motor for each wheel adds weight, size and cost.

In the promotional video, Nissan deploys e-4ORCE in a prototype Leaf e+ hatchback, but it seems the Nissan Ariya concept electric SUV could be the automaker’s first electric all-wheel drive vehicle, set to launch as soon as 2021.
