The first ePrix of the new decade takes place in Santiago, Chile. The ABB FIA Formula E Championship resumes on Saturday 18 January, where 24 drivers racing for 12 separate teams will look to take pole position.
Currently, British-born Alexander Sims who races for BMW i Andretti Motorsport, heads up the championship standings with 35 points to his name; Stoffel Vandoorne is in second with 30 points and Sam Bird in third with 26 points.
As for the team standings, the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team lead the pack with 38 points; Envision Virgin Racing is in a close second with 36 points and BMW i Andretti Motorsport in third with 35 points. It's likely the standings will change following the ePrix in Santiago.
Race number three will take place at 18:00 GMT and can be watched for free through BBC iPlayer, or through other platforms, which you can find through the Formula E website.
Last year, Sebastien Buemi scored Nissan e.dams' first pole position and the racing driver is aiming to get the same result this year: “The race weekend in Chile was an important step for our program last year, when we scored our first series pole position. Twelve months later, we want to go beyond that performance and target our first win for season six. We demonstrated some strong pace at the opening round, and I'm confident our updated powertrain will ensure we remain very competitive.”
“Our performance in Riyadh was extremely promising, but we know we have to keep pushing, because the competition in season six has risen to a new level,” said Michael Carcamo, Nissan's global motorsports director. “We can't rest on our laurels – we still have a lot of homework to do before we hit the track in Chile.”
Nissan used Formula E to demonstrate the power and performance of its EV technology; the automaker chose Chile as part of its four major Latin American markets in which to introduce the new Nissan Leaf in July 2019. The electric car is now available in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Uruguay, and will soon go on sale in Puerto Rico and Ecuador.
