Extreme E and Rosberg X Racing kick off legacy initiatives in Sardinia

Extreme E, the FIA-sanctioned international off-road racing series, and Rosberg X Racing, an electric racing team, have teamed up to restore an area in Sardinia, Italy, which wildfires had ravaged in 2021.

The collaboration follows the NEOM Island X Prix double-header, co-organised by the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI) and Regione Sardegna, earlier this year. The programme aims to restore four hectares of soil and plant 4,000 trees on the island of Sardinia.

The fires in Sardinia destroyed 20,000 hectares of land last year and displaced over 1,000 people. The calamity resulted in serious damage to thousands of livelihoods, as well as to nature, including the damage to the water quality of the ocean.

“Through our Driven By Purpose campaign we support social and environmental projects at each of the series' race locations,” said Nico Rosberg, founder, and CEO of RXR.

Extreme E will return to Sardinia for Season 3 next year. In the past, it has launched a fire prevention campaign within the area of Montiferru and helped restore the historic olive groves lost to the wildfires in association with Vodafone Business, Extreme E’s Technology Communications Partner. The project – which includes Allianz, Life Terra, and MEDSEA Foundation – has been undertaken to bring back native species of both bushes and trees, adding additional biodiversity in the area and ensuring a resilient, balanced ecosystem to the effects of climate change.

Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky of RXR commented: “For me, the most important race I will ever participate in is the race to save our planet.”
