Polestar 2 gains Android R in OTA software upgrade

Polestar 2 owners will soon be able to enjoy another over-the-air update that includes Android R for the Android Automotive OS infotainment system plus enhanced app and functionality potential for the future.

The update is due to roll out to customers incrementally from early April 2022.

All software enhancements are downloaded and installed remotely.

“Our approach to software technology in our cars is that it should not be any different from how the latest software is pushed out on smartphones and computers in everyday life,” says Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath.

“With OTA updates, our customers receive constant enhancements and can choose when to install the latest updates, without making a trip to a workshop. We’re very encouraged by the positive response as seen from the exponential growth in the number of OTA installations, and will continue to deliver ongoing enhancements.”

Polestar has now released 10 major OTA updates since launching remote updates for the 2, with one major OTA upgrade out every seven weeks on average.

Other recent enhancements delivered OTA include drivetrain optimisations, the ability to schedule charging times, an eco-climate mode to improve range, and battery optimisation and preconditioning.

In another OTA update for the Long Range Dual Motor, a software upgrade improved the driving experience, power and torque. Output increased to 350kW and 680Nm, which reduced the 0-60mph sprint time to 4.4 seconds.

Polestar said that more than 90% of Polestar 2 owners regularly install remote software updates.
