ACC to boost battery production with new Stellantis factory investment in Italy

The Automotive Cell Company (ACC) is planning to transform Stellantis’s existing plant in Termoli, Italy into a new battery facility.

ACC is a joint venture dedicated to the manufacture of high-performance batteries in Europe bringing together the expertise of three companies – Stellantis, Saft and Opel. Mercedes-Benz is also due to become a new, equal partner in the coming months.

All partners are committed to increasing ACC’s industrial capacity to at least 120 gigawatt hours by 2030 and to scaling up the production of battery cells and modules.

“We are grateful to everyone involved in this investment to secure the future of the great community in Termoli,” said Carlos Tavares, Stellantis’s chief executive.

“Transforming the existing plant to help support a more sustainable future positions ACC as the European leader in battery manufacturing and reaffirms, thanks to the collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development, Italy’s role in supporting Stellantis’ transformation to a sustainable mobility tech company.”

ACC was founded by Stellantis and TotalEnergies/Saft in August 2020.

To complement this scale up in battery production, Stellantis has announced a goal to sell five million BEVs annually by 2030. Stellantis also plans to increase battery capacity by 140 GWh to 400 GWh, to be supported by five Gigafactories together with additional supply contracts.
