Aston Martin and Britishvolt have agreed to co-develop bespoke high performance battery technology.
The two British firms formalised the arrangement in a Memorandum of Understanding.
The battery packs, including bespoke modules and a battery management system, will be designed and developed by teams from Aston Martin and Britishvolt, specifically for use in the carmaker's high performance EVs.
“This powerful collaboration combines Aston Martin’s 109 years of engineering mastery with the expertise of a fast-growing UK technology business,” said Tobias Moers, Aston Martin’s chief executive.
“Working together with Britishvolt, I believe we can create new technologies to power benchmark-setting Aston Martin electric cars that will match our reputation for high performance and ultra-luxury with the highest standards of sustainability.”
Aston Martin plans to launch its first plug-in hybrid sports car called the Valhalla in early 2024.
By 2026, all new Aston Martin product lines will have an electrified powertrain option, with its core product portfolio due to be fully electric by 2030.
The new partnership with Britishvolt will run alongside Aston Martin’s technology agreement with Mercedes-Benz AG, and any investment will be funded by existing capital expenditure commitments to developing EVs.
