StoreDot announces new technology extending EV battery lifespan

Battery pioneer StoreDot has developed innovative technology that not only extends the lifespan of batteries in EVs but also means these batteries can be used for ‘second life’ applications.

The Israeli company’s technology will help maintain the performance of EVs for many more years without significantly affecting the vehicle’s total range.

There is no performance drop off even after 1,000 cycles and 80% capacity – the point at which rival lithium-ion fast charging technologies rapidly deteriorate.

Even after 1,700 cycles, StoreDot’s batteries maintain 70% of their original capacity making them highly effective in second life applications, such as in energy storage and grid load balancing systems.

StoreDot is a leader in extreme fast charging technologies and helping drivers overcome charging anxiety – which according to the company’s chief executive, Dr Doron Myersdorf – is the biggest barrier to EV ownership.

“We now have the ability to hugely extend the life of our batteries, long after their vehicle service life.”

“Not only will this transformative development encourage more people to drive EVs, but this technology has huge benefits for sustainability too, reducing the need to retire and recycle an expensive component that can now serve in critical second life applications.”

This latest technology works together with StoreDot’s self-repairing cells system, which identifies underperforming cells in an EV and takes them out of service to fix them.

The company has also had patents granted for technologies that give EVs a constant range throughout the vehicle’s life, even as the battery deteriorates.

Its XFC batteries that provide a 50% reduction in charging time are set to be mass-produced by leading global car makers by 2024.
