Kia’s EV9 SUV Concept on display at AutoMobility show in LA

Kia revealed its all-electric SUV concept called the Kia Concept EV9 at the AutoMobility event in LA last week, signalling what might be the next addition to its new-generation EV line-up.

Developed on the company’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the EV9 embodies Kia’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions.

The SUVs design is based on Kia’s new philosophy ‘Opposites United’. This is a vision where nature and modernity can co-exist. Its exterior then, is inspired by nature, and uses upcycled materials developed from waste deposited into the marine ecosystem.

From the outside it has an “adventurous, outgoing and recreational form with its rugged and upright stance,” said Kia in a statement. Kia’s iconic Tiger Face facade has also been reinterpreted for the EV era. The grille now has a ‘star cloud’ pattern display, which is hidden when the vehicle is not in use, but then lights up when it’s moving.

Suitable for urban environments and leisure pursuits away from cities, the SUV can deliver up to 300 miles of range on a single charge. There is an ultra-fast 350kW charger which replenishes the battery from 10-80% in 20-30 minutes.

Its modern interior features a 27-inch ultra-wide infotainment display serving as the “nerve centre” for all driver and passenger requirements, including media, climate control and comfort functions. There is also a panoramic sky roof to give passengers relaxing views from above. The floor is made from recycled fishing nets whilst the seating fabric comes from recycled plastic bottles and wool fibres. Kia has fitted the interior space with vegan leather upholstery throughout as this is more ethical and sustainable then animal leather used in older models.

Karim Habib, senior vice president and head of Kia’s global design centre, said: “The Kia Concept EV9 is yet another important marker for us in what has been an incredible journey since the start of the year. Having made our intentions clear – to become a global leader in sustainable mobility solutions – today we are proud to show the world our all-electric SUV concept, which fuses together an advanced zero-emissions powertrain, a cutting-edge exterior design and a contemporary and innovative tech-based interior space.”

Kia’s intention is to be carbon neutral throughout its value chain by 2045. The Concept EV9 will be on display at the AutoMobility event from November 17-28.
