The Volkswagen Group significantly increased its output of electric vehicles between July and September 2021, in what Head of Sales Christian Dalheim called a “global electric offensive”.
The Volkswagen Group delivered 122,100 battery electric vehicles between July and September, despite semiconductor shortages. This marks a 109 per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
There has also been a strong demand for plug-in hybrid drive models, with the Volkswagen Group delivering 246,000 plug-in hybrid drive vehicles in the first nine months of 2021.
The company also expanded its output in China, delivering 28,900 battery electric vehicles in the third quarter. Deliveries of battery electric vehicles in China were 60 per cent higher in the July to September period compared to the first six months of the year.
Europe remains Volkswagen Group’s biggest market for electric vehicles, however, amounting to a 26 per cent battery electric vehicle market share. According to Dalheim, the Volkswagen Group is the number one provider of all-electric vehicles in Europe, and number two in the USA. Worldwide, the company delivered a total of 293,100 battery electric vehicles between January and September 2021.
“The strong demand for our global target for the year of one million electrified vehicles is definitely there,” Dalheim added.
The Volkswagen Group’s most popular battery electric vehicle so far in 2021 is the Volkswagen ID.4, an all-electric SUV. “We are on track to meeting our target for the year of delivering 80,000 to 100,000 vehicles of the ID. model family,” said Dalheim.
The core brand Volkswagen leads the supply of battery electric vehicles. Volkswagen Group brands Audi, ŠKODA, Porsche and SEAT have also increased deliveries of BEVs.
Other in-demand electric models from the company include the Audi e-tron, the Porsche Taycan and the ŠKODA Enyaq iV.
