Hyundai launches Ioniq 5 electric CUV

Hyundai Motor Company has launched the Ioniq 5 midsize CUV during a virtual world premiere event.

Ioniq 5 is built upon Hyundai’s dedicated BEV architecture called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).

The EV is available with a range of power electric configurations to fit the mobility needs of every customer. Drivers can select from two battery pack options, either 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh, and two electric motor layouts, either with a rear motor only or with both front and rear motors. All variations provide outstanding range and deliver a top speed of 185 km/h.

At the top of the electric motor line-up is an all-wheel drive option paired with the 72.6-kWh battery, producing a combined power output of 225-kWh and 605 Nm of torque. This version can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.

When equipped with a two-wheel drive powertrain and a 72.6-kWh battery, Ioniq 5’s maximum driving WLTP range on a single charge will be around 470 to 480 km.

The E-GMP can support both 400-V and 800-V charging infrastructures. The platform offers 800-V charging capability as standard, along with 400-V charging, without the need for additional components or adapters.

With a 350-kW charger, Ioniq 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes. Drivers only need to charge the vehicle for five minutes to get 100 km of range.

The EV is also equipped with the innovative Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, which allows customers to freely use or charge any electric devices, such as electric bicycles, scooters or camping equipment, serving as a charger on wheels.

The V2L function can supply up to 3.6 kW of power. The V2L port is located under the second-row seats, and it can be activated when a vehicle is on. Another V2L port is located at the charging port on the vehicle exterior.

The interiors of the new Ioniq 5 are also top-notch as the dual cockpit features a 12-inch, full-touch infotainment screen and hoodless 12-inch digital gauge cluster that can be customized to meet customers’ needs. Also, this is the first time that Hyundai features an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD), essentially turning the windshield into a display screen.

Ioniq 5’s crossover body type achieves unique proportions and short overhangs due to its elongated wheelbase. Measuring 4,635-mm long, 1,890-mm wide and 1,605-mm tall on a 3,000-mm wheelbase, the car offers D-segment-like space in a midsize CUV.

This Hyundai can also be equipped with an eco-friendly solar roof, which supports the vehicle’s electric power source by collecting energy and transferring it to the battery pack, improving efficiency. The solar roof can prevent battery discharge while providing an additional driving range.

Hyundai believes that its new Ioniq 5 is a game changer as it offers a truly unique experience, according to Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer.

“Ioniq 5 will accommodate lifestyles without limits, proactively caring for customers’ needs throughout their journey,” he said. “It is truly the first electric vehicle to provide a new experience with its innovative use of interior space and advanced technologies.”

As we reported the Ioniq 5 is only the start as Hyundai has announced last year that its dedicated EV brand will launch three innovative electric vehicles over the next four years.
