August is yet another good month for EV sales, according to SMMT data

August sales highlight once again that 2020 is a strong year for greener technologies such as hybrid and battery electric vehicles.

Registrations of battery electric cars increased by 77.6% this month compared to August of last year and Plug-in hybrid vehicles have seen an incredible 221.1% increase in registration. Also, Hybrid vehicles are riding the positive wave with a decent 38.2% boost.

Overall, as we reported it has been a tough year for internal combustion engines, and this month is no exception. Diesel sales have experienced a 39.5% decrease from last year, while Petrol numbers are also down 14.7%.

The market share of BEV, PHEV and HEV has seen an important expansion this year as fully electric vehicles correspond to 6.4% of the overall share in August comparted to only 3.4% last year. Plug-ins were 3.3% and hybrids 6.4%.

The UK electric vehicle market is not the only one thriving this year as overall the entire region is seeing increased EV sales. Numbers don’t lie and they clearly show that for the first time in years, the European electric market has seen more sales than the Chinese one. According to a report from Bloomberg, around 380,000 electric vehicles were sold over the 16 main European markets in the first six months of the year.

Unfortunately, no EV has yet made it into the top 10 of bestselling cars, but if these numbers are keeping heading this way it will be only a matter of time before we witness an electric vehicle in that list.
