It is always interesting to check out which are the bestselling EV models in China as the country has the largest market share of electric vehicles in the world. In July, the Tesla Model 3 was at the top of the chart with over 11,000 units sold. However, in a solid second place, well above all the other models there, is the Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV. Unknown around the world but apparently very popular in China, it achieved over 7,000 units sold just in July.

This is a very intriguing model, as the starting price is only $4,200 and the demand for this vehicle is going through the roof. According to market data, 50,000 units have been ordered already and deliveries in August have surpassed the 15,000 mark.

Modest is the key word to describe this vehicle from the price to its dimensions as this car is only 2,917 mm (114.8in) long, 1,493 mm (58.8in) wide, 1,621 mm (63.8in) high, and with a 1,940 mm (76.4in) wheelbase, which makes it a very compact vehicle. It is just a little bit bigger than the Smart EQ fortwo but smaller than a Toyota Aygo. With these dimensions this car could be a successful product in chaotic cities, such as Rome and Paris, where finding a parking spot can be a daring quest.

The Wuling Hong Guang Mini EV is powered by a compact 13.8 kWh battery pack and a motor that produces a mere 27 hp for a top speed of 62 mph. On a single charge it will have a range of 124 miles, which is perfect for urban life.

This model is compact, inexpensive and has enough range to thrive in a big metropolis. All these peculiar characteristics make this EV a possible game changer for the industry as it is less expensive than a two-wheeler and it could help spread the technology further and faster. The car is unknown outside of China, but at WhichEV, we have a feeling that if it will ever land in the European market it might have the same success.
