VW reveals GTX variants of the ID.3 and ID.7 Tourer

Both will get head-turning looks and a decent amount of horsepower

Volkswagen continues the evolution of its electric vehicle line-up with the unveiling of two new additions: the ID.3 GTX and the ID.7 GTX Tourer. These models mark a notable expansion in Volkswagen's range of electric vehicles, which aim to bring sportiness and performance to the forefront of electric mobility. With the introduction of these vehicles, Volkswagen is looking to bridge the gap between traditional sporty driving dynamics and the emerging electric vehicle market. The design team has done its job, but do these cars have enough horses under the bonnet to truly represent the GTX/GTi logo?

The ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer have been presented to the world in a double premiere, showcasing Volkswagen's latest technological advancements in electric drivetrains.

In terms of the underlying platform, the ID.3 GTX is essentially a rebuilt Cupra Born VZ, with the fastest option able to hit 62mph in 5.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 124mph. It is rumoured to be shipping with a new 79kWh battery system. Likewise, the ID.7 GTX Tourer could well have a fresh 86kWh battery.

Given that these vehicles have been positioned to offer drivers a blend of dynamic performance, distinctive design – and the environmental benefits of electric power – the actual performance figures feel ‘good, but not spectacular' in modern EV terms. The introduction of these models is part of Volkswagen's broader strategy to adapt its popular GTX concept to more products.

The ID.3 GTX is now the fastest product in the ID.3 line-up, equipped with Volkswagen's most potent electric drivetrain. As such, it represents a new era of performance for VW EV fans, paired with the efficiency and sustainability of electric power. Volkswagen aims to attract enthusiasts of sporty driving with the ID.3 GTX, providing a vehicle that does not compromise on performance despite its electric nature.

They must be hoping that pure performance is not top of the prospective buyer's list, as the ID.3 GTX will be left far behind by the likes of the MG4 XPower – which is likely to be cheaper while offering more than 100hp more than the VW.

Following in the footsteps of the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX models, the ID.3 GTX has been designed to offer a unique driving experience. Every fifth newly registered ID.4 and ID.5 in Europe is a GTX model, demonstrating the popularity and appeal of Volkswagen's approach to electric mobility. The ID.3 GTX is expected to build on this success, offering a compact yet powerful option for those seeking an electric vehicle with a sporty edge.

The ID.7 GTX Tourer, on the other hand, is presented as the most powerful model in Volkswagen's estate line-up to date, which they do by putting a similar amount of motor power as the ID.3 GTX into a larger/heavier vehicle, with more boot space.

It aims to combine the spacious practicality expected of an estate with the performance characteristics of a traditional sports car. This dual-motor all-wheel-drive vehicle aims to set a new standard for VW sporty mobility, delivering instant power and torque, making it a compelling option for those who desire both performance and utility.

The design and equipment of both models reflect their sporty ambitions. The ID.3 GTX features a distinctive exterior with a new front bumper, unique daytime running lights, and 20-inch Skagen alloy wheels. Inside, the vehicle boasts premium sports seats and specific design elements that underline its performance credentials. The ID.7 GTX Tourer also distinguishes itself with a unique bumper, honeycomb grille and illuminated badges – alongside customised seats and design details that enhance its sporty appeal.

Volkswagen's commitment to electric mobility is evident in the development of these models. By combining the performance characteristics traditionally associated with its GT models with the environmental benefits of electric power, Volkswagen is catering to a growing segment of consumers who seek dynamic driving experiences without compromising on sustainability.

Kai Grünitz, a member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development, emphasised the unique qualities of the ID.3 GTX Performance, drawing parallels between it and the iconic Golf GTI Clubsport. Despite the different power sources, Grünitz highlighted the shared excitement and driving pleasure that both models offer, showcasing Volkswagen's ability to translate its heritage of performance into the electric vehicle realm.

The ID.3 GTX stands out not only for its performance but also for its design. Its exterior is characterised by a new front bumper with a black air intake in a diamond-style design, high-gloss black body elements, and newly designed side sills. The vehicle's interior is equally impressive, featuring ergonomic premium sports seats and red decorative stitching, further enhancing its sporty character.

The ID.7 GTX Tourer's introduction as the most potent model in Volkswagen's estate line-up underscores the brand's innovative approach to combining utility with performance. Its all-wheel-drive system, instant power delivery, and spacious interior are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of consumers, from families to enthusiasts seeking a versatile yet performance-oriented vehicle.

Volkswagen's launch of the ID.3 GTX and ID.7 GTX Tourer represents a significant step forward in the electrification of its vehicle range, but the actual performance levels are likely to lag behind certain key competitors.

That said, the brand certainly has its fans, so by offering models that combine sportiness, performance and electric efficiency, Volkswagen is positioning itself at the forefront of a shift towards more sustainable and dynamic driving experiences.
