The electric off-road racing series, Extreme E, returns for its fourth season this weekend (February 17-18) with the Desert X Prix in Saudi Arabia. This year's edition promises even more excitement with new teams, new drivers, and revamped regulations shaking things up.

Fresh Faces, Familiar Names

The 2024 grid boasts a mix of established teams and exciting newcomers. Defending champions Rosberg X Racing return with their dominant duo, Johan Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky, aiming for a hat trick. ACCIONA | SAINZ XE Team, narrowly defeated in 2023, welcomes Jamaican Fraser McConnell to partner with Laia Sanz, hoping for their maiden title.

E.ON Veloce Racing, 2023 Desert X Prix final race winners, continue their journey with Molly Taylor and Kevin Hansen, aiming to build on their strong performance. Andretti Altawkilat Extreme E, with Timmy Hansen and Catie Munnings, seek a return to the podium after a challenging season.

New Blood and Motorsport Royalty

Adding to the mix are thrilling newcomers. NEOM McLaren Extreme E debuts with Cristina Gutiérrez and Mattias Ekström, both boasting championship-winning experience. JBXE returns with Andreas Bakkerud and Dania Akeel, the first Saudi woman competing in Extreme E.

The SUN Minimeal Team joins the fray with Timo Scheider and Klara Andersson, while LEGACY MOTOR CLUB, led by the legendary NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, enters with Gray Leadbetter and Travis Pastrana.

Revamped Rules for More Drama

The 2024 season sees several rule changes to enhance competition. Four cars per Heat, increased points for Redemption Race winners, and reversed grid choices in Qualifying provide for unpredictable and thrilling races. Fan voting in GridPlay and the Continental Traction Challenge remain crucial for strategic victories.

Saudi Arabia: A Familiar Battleground

The desert sands of Saudi Arabia have witnessed two RXR victories and two additional podiums, making them the team to beat. However, last year's Desert X Prix saw surprising upsets with Veloce and ASXE grabbing their first wins. With eight teams hungry for glory, the season opener promises an electrifying spectacle.
