BMW has unveiled the eighth generation of its iconic 5 Series Saloon, looking to set a new benchmark in business-class vehicles. This latest iteration aims to blend advanced technology, sleek design and driving pleasure – with sustainability and innovation. They've even included a discount scheme on high-speed public charging.

Perhaps the most significant development with the new 5 Series is the introduction of all-electric drive models. For the first time, the BMW 5 Series Saloon is offered with the BMW i5 eDrive40 and the high-performance BMW i5 M60 xDrive. The eDrive40 boasts a remarkable 356-mile range, while the i5 M60 xDrive is a performance powerhouse, accelerating from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

The new 5 Series is the first BMW in the UK to feature a leather-free interior called Veganza as standard from launch. This ethical and stylish choice encompasses the seats, dashboard, and door panels, providing a sustainable option for conscious consumers.

The BMW 5 Series Saloon continues to push the envelope in in-car technology. It introduces the BMW Interaction Bar, inspired by the 7 Series, and features a backlit unit with touch-sensitive controls that extend across the width of the instrument panel and door panels. Additionally, the 5 Series becomes the first BMW in the UK to incorporate in-car gaming with AirConsole, taking the driving experience to a whole new level.

The eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Saloon intensifies its commitment to sustainability. The supply chain's carbon footprint is reduced by 20 to 25 percent, and the car's overall life cycle sees a remarkable reduction of up to 58 percent compared to its predecessor.

The new 5 Series Saloon showcases the sporty elegance the model is known for, with Adaptive LED Matrix Headlights and glare-free High Beam Assist. The all-electric variants, BMW i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 xDrive, receive unique exterior features that highlight their sporting prowess.

For the first time in the model's history, the 5 Series Saloon is available with a panoramic roof, significantly increasing the interior's spacious and airy feel. The saloon achieves an impressive coefficient of drag (Cd) value of 0.23, thanks to EfficientDynamics measures such as air flap control, AirCurtains, aerodynamic wheels, and a smooth underbody.

Efficiency takes centre stage with features like air flap control, Air Curtains, and optimized light alloy wheels that enhance electric range. The high-voltage battery in the all-electric variants, using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, offers a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive boasts a range of 282 – 320 miles (WLTP), while the BMW i5 eDrive40 reaches a range of 296 – 362 miles.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) enables AC charging up to 11kW, with optional 22kW charging available on the i5 M60 xDrive. When using DC fast-charging stations, it takes around 30 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent, adding up to 97 miles in just 10 minutes at such stations. The latest charging software ensures optimized charging times. Additionally, waste heat from the electric motors is used to preheat the battery, further increasing energy efficiency.

BMW Charging offers attractive and fixed kilowatt hour prices for AC and DC charging, making it convenient and cost-effective for BMW i5 owners. For the first twelve months in the UK, monthly fees for the bp pulse and IONITY Plus package are waived. These packages guarantee access to renewable energy and a vast network of over 466,300 public charging points in 29 European countries with a single registration.

The BMW 5 Series Saloon doesn't just impress with its electric performance but also offers an exceptional sound experience. The standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System provides high-quality audio with 12 speakers and a 205-watt amplifier. For audiophiles, the optional Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, with 18 speakers and a 655-watt amplifier, takes the acoustic experience to the next level.

The all-electric BMW i5 adds a unique auditory dimension to the driving experience. The BMW IconicSounds Electric, developed in collaboration with acclaimed composer Hans Zimmer, responds to accelerator pedal inputs. Different modes, including SPORT mode, enhance the sound for a more engaging and dynamic driving experience.

The new BMW 5 Series Saloon enhances its long-distance capabilities with a high payload capacity and the option for an electrically-deployed towbar, supporting towing up to 2,000kg. This makes the 5 Series Saloon an ideal choice for those who seek practicality and performance.

The new BMW i5 introduces two new driving modes, EFFICIENT and MAX RANGE. These modes allow drivers to optimize their driving experience by limiting power, increasing efficiency, and extending range.

The charging experience is further enhanced with pre-conditioning, ensuring the battery is ready for efficient charging before planned stops. The cloud-based navigation system calculates charge-optimized routes and helps drivers find the most convenient charging points.

The eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Saloon redefines luxury, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology in the business-class segment. With an all-electric drive, innovative interior options, and a focus on efficiency, BMW is taking a giant leap forward in the world of premium electric vehicles. The electric BMW 5 Series range will start from £74,000 OTR, and it's poised to set new standards in the luxury sedan market.
