MG4 XPOWER specs announced as MG prepares for European production

Does the choice to launch in Racing Green give British drivers an indication of where the new plant might be?

The 4th of July 2023 saw the views on WhichEV's MG4 video pass the 200,000 mark. Apt that MG Motor UK has picked this time to announce pricing and specifications for its new high-performance all-electric hatchback, the MG4 EV XPower. The company claims that the new model will be its most powerful production car to date. Priced from £36,495, the MG4 XPOWER aims to provide drivers with exhilarating power and dynamics at a competitive price point. What is even more exciting is the possibility that MG will move at least some of its production back to Europe. Could the UK be about to experience a car making renaissance?

The MG4 XPOWER features a dual motor powertrain delivering 435PS and up to 600Nm of torque, placing it among the most potent high-performance hatchbacks on the market. With a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.8 seconds, the XPOWER offers impressive performance – especially when you consider that the baseline Porsche 911 Carrera takes closer to 4 seconds. Despite its power, the vehicle boasts understated exterior design revisions, distinguishing it from traditional high-powered hatchbacks.

The exterior enhancements of the MG4 XPOWER include orange ‘XPOWER' brake callipers, a two-tone black roof, new 18″ alloy wheels, and polished trim accents. At the time of going to press, there were even some 0% finance options in the mix – although it's not clear whether these would extend to hot-hatch variants.

Drivers have always loved it when a production car matches early concept designs – which seems to happen more with EVs

Traditionalists will love the fact that it also offers an exclusive new ‘Racing Green' colour option. The aim is to provide a compact EV that appeals to customers seeking pure performance without the typical loud aesthetics associated with high-performance vehicles. Having survived two world wars, MG's famous Longbridge plant near Birmingham finally closed its doors in 2016 – but a huge increase in demand for its products, coupled with some interesting incentives – look to have encouraged MG to produce closer to its roots.

The MG4 XPOWER is built on the MG4's Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) and features a new dual motor configuration. The front and rear electric motors deliver a total output of up to 320kW and 435PS to all four wheels. The vehicle incorporates a Dynamic Cornering Control System, featuring a locking electronic differential and Intelligent Motor Control, allowing torque vectoring between all four wheels. This system ensures maximum traction and composure in various driving conditions.

To enhance its handling characteristics, the MG4 XPOWER undergoes a comprehensive series of suspension upgrades, including recalibrated spring and damper tuning, stiffer anti-roll bars, and sharper steering. The overall suspension stiffness has been increased by up to 25%, building upon the acclaimed handling characteristics of the current MG4 models.

The MG engineering team has also recalibrated the regenerative braking software, enabling one-pedal driving in suitable situations. The vehicle's stopping power has been improved, reducing the 62-0mph stopping distance to just 33.9 meters. The MG4 XPOWER is equipped with uprated, ventilated 345mm discs on all four corners and new premium Bridgestone Turanza tires for excellent grip and rolling efficiency.

In addition to the MG4 XPOWER, MG Motor UK will unveil the MG EX4 concept car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The EX4 concept is inspired by the Metro 6R4 rally legend from the 1980s and utilizes the electric drivetrain of the MG4 XPOWER. Designed by MG's team in London, the EX4 features a distinctive livery commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Metro 6R4.
