Xpeng launches P7 sedan and G9 SUV for Europe

eCar Expo in Stockholm chosen as launch location

A little over two years since Xpeng started delivery of its G3 into the Norwegian market at around the €32,000 mark, it is now taking orders for the P7 sedan and G9 SUV. Both cars were launched at the eCar Expo in Stockholm at the start of February 2023 and Brain Gu, President of Xpeng, is hoping that his company's efforts with styling, quality control and bleeding edge technology and innovation will be enough to pick up significant market share in the leading Nordic markets.

Almost the first thing that strikes you about these cars is the warranty. Customers who order a P7 or G9 in 2023 will get an extended seven-year warranty that will cover the vehicle for up to 100,000 miles. This warranty is linked to the vehicle and will pass to the next owner on re-sale. Given that Xpeng has already built a support network in the Scandinavian countries, such a long warranty will go a long way to assuaging any fears that customers might have about brand reputation and reliability – two major challenges for EV brands launching into the fiercely competitive car market.

Then you have the battery/charging systems, which are also market-leading. The flagship G9 comes with a 98kWh battery and the P7 comes with an 86kWh battery. Both make use of an 800v silicon carbide platform for ultra-fast charging. Xpeng claims that the G9 can pick up 60 miles in 5 minutes, with an 80% charge in 20 mins – pulling up to 300kW. The P7 can pull 175kW, with an 80% charge in just under half an hour. They can both take 11kW AC charges.

Charging is part of the package and Xpeng will set up up buyers for home charger installation with both the P7 and G9 via a third party supplier, with Plugsurfing and Shell Recharge as partners for public charging.

In terms of performance, the top spec G9 offers 551hp and 717Nm of torque, hitting 62mph in 3.9 seconds – on its way to a top speed of 125mph. Range on the various G9 models stretches between 285 miles and 355 miles (WLTP).

The P7 is no slouch, either, with the performance variant hitting 62mph in 4.1 seconds. It also has a maximum speed of 125mph and Xpeng tells us that the ranges vary between 313 and 358 miles (WLTP). No need to worry about stopping, as these vehicles come with upgraded Brembo braking systems. The top of the range P7 model is called ‘Wing' – to signify the addition of gullwing doors.

The combination of performance, style and range is due, in no small part, to the new Xpeng model's low drag coefficients – with the P7 hitting 0.236 – just 0.06 above the Tesla Model 3.

So how much will these two new model cost?  We have been given the Euro price for the Nordic region and we've done a quick calculation on how that would likely translate to a UK price.

Expected Euro Price P7 G9 SUV
RWD Std Range € 57,990
RWD Long Range € 49,990 € 61,990
AWD Performance € 59,990 € 71,990
Wing Edition € 69,990
Projected UK Price P7 G9 SUV
RWD Std Range £55,000
RWD Long Range £45,000 £57,000
AWD Performance £55,000 £67,000
Wing Edition £64,000

Xpeng promises ‘evolutionary travel, powered by intelligence‘ and you have to say that the driving, parking & safety spec tables for both models are ‘full' – with ‘ticks' for every function. That means you'll have the benefit of:-

All these safety features, and more, are made possible by an advanced onboard processing system – powered by an Nvidia Orin-X processor. This chip monitors and controls five HD radar systems, a dozen ultra sonic sensors, the surround view camera, seven high-perception cameras and an in-car camera. Over the air updates are standard and the car can communicate with its driver in English, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish.

It's uncertain as to why the networking function is driven by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155, which only offers 4G access. We would expect the next generation of Xpeng vehicles to offer much faster 5G external comms.

To help engage with the local market, Xpeng is opening delivery and service centres in all of the Nordic countries. Additional partnerships will be announced across Europe during 2023.

“Xpeng G9 and P7 bring a combination of superior styling, quality, performance and comfort, exemplifying our market-leading technology and innovation”, said Brian Gu, Vice Chair and President. “Today also represents a significant milestone as we build our presence in Europe. We believe both vehicles deliver a new level of sophistication and a people-first mobility experience, and will be the electric vehicles of choice for many European customers.”

The Xpeng range doesn't exactly look like anything else on the road, but the P7 bears some resemblance to the Model 3 and the G9 has the look and feel of a high-end Genesis EV.

Both cars look good, the performance and feature list are very competitive – as is the pricing. It will be interesting to see just how well Xpeng can compete with the major car brands in the coming years. You can find out more about Xpeng, the P7 and G9 over here. We can't wait for them to arrive in the UK, although the timeframe for this has not been announced yet.
