CUPRA joins ABT to compete in Formula E

Barcelona-based car brand CUPRA will join ABT Sportsline, the German motor racing and auto tuning company, to compete in the ABB FIA Formula E, the leading electric racing competition, for the 2023 season.

For the team's maiden season, it will partner under the name ABT CUPRA Formula E Team, with drivers Robin Frijns (Netherlands) and Nico Müller (Switzerland).

ABB FIA Formula E is the “world’s first all-electric” off-road championship and the only sport that has been net-zero certified since its inception.

In the past, CUPRA has recorded achievements in competitions like the FIA ETCR series and Extreme E.

Participation in the “KönigKlasse” of all-electric performance racing platforms will have a huge impact on the brand owing to the global visibility and technical innovation capabilities that Formula E provides, CUPRA said in a statement.

CUPRA began its electric motorsport journey by developing the e-Racer, the world’s first all-electric touring car. Established in 2018, it envisions challenging racing performance and pioneering new formats of the sport, creating new emotions and experiences.

The brand said that participation in the competition complements the way it is moving towards an electrified range by the end of this decade. “The brand shares the competition’s belief in the importance of highlighting the issues caused by climate change,” CUPRA said.
