World EV sales continue upward trajectory says new data

Sales of electric vehicles globally are continuing their positive trend, recent figures from Swedish database EV Volumes indicate.

In total, 4.3 million new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) were delivered during the first half of 2022, up 60% compared to the same time last year.

Region-wise, China’s sales appear to have overcome challenges – in the form of real estate crisis and covid-induced lockdowns – by posting a growth of 113%, in the first six months of the year.

Following two years of steep sales increases in Europe, EVs gained only 9% over H1 2021, figures show. Weak overall vehicle markets and persistent component shortages have taken their toll, exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. EV sales in the US and Canada increased by 49% for H1.

Faster adoption of EVs in weak auto markets further boosted the market share. Norway topped the highest market share of EVs in H1, followed by China and Europe. The fastest growing markets were India with 20,700 units of BEV & PHEV for H1 – an increase of 273% – and New Zealand with 8,300 units, up 260 %.

EV Volumes noted that robust increase in EV sales enabled nearly all OEMs to grow their sales in the first half. Tesla’s Model Y and 3 clinched the top spots when it comes to the deliveries, followed by BYD.

When it comes to the light vehicles, the market is contracting again. Following a brief recovery in late 2020 H2 and early 2021, the first six months of the year saw sales dropping 8% than last year.
