Volvo has revealed its seven-seater all-electric SUV EX90 in Stockholm, stating it will reveal one new EV each year to become an all-electric automaker by 2030.
The flagship e-SUV will be built in the USA starting next year and later also in China, the Swedish auto giant said. By then, it aims for those two production facilities to be climate-neutral.
The company described the EX90 as a family car with modern proportions, combined with cutting-edge technology in core computing, connectivity, and electrification to optimise safety, efficiency, and aesthetics.
“EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” Chief Executive Jim Rowan said.
Delivering up to 373 miles (600 kilometres) of tailpipe-emission-free driving range on a single charge, according to the WLTP test cycle, it charges from 10% to 80% battery capacity in under 30 minutes. The initially available twin-motor all-wheel-drive version is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors together delivering in its performance version 380kW (517hp) and 910Nm of torque, according to Volvo.
The e-SUV has an invisible shield of safety enabled by sensing technology. State-of-the art sensors such as cameras, radars and lidar are connected to the car’s high-performance core computers, where Nvidia Drive runs the brand’s in-house software to create a real-time, 360-degree view of the world. The lidar can sense the road in front, whether it’s day or night, also at highway speeds. It can see small objects hundreds of metres ahead, creating more time to inform, act and avoid. The sensors also contribute to improving the reliability and overall performance of the assisted driving function, pilot assist, with a new steering support function while changing lanes, the company said.
Special sensors and cameras gauge eye gaze concentration. The technology allows the vehicle to understand when a driver is distracted, drowsy or otherwise inattentive. It will alert them, first softly nudging, then more insistent. And if the unthinkable happens and they fall asleep or are taken ill while driving, the vehicle is designed to safely stop and call for help.
The e-SUV comes equipped with a 14.5-inch centre screen and an infotainment system with Google built in. Google apps and services, including hands-free help from Google Assistant, Google Maps navigation and more of your favourite apps on Google Play, all come built in.
The vehicle contains approximately 15% of recycled steel, 25% of recycled aluminium as well as 48 kilogrammes of recycled plastics and bio-based materials, which corresponds to around 15% of the total plastic used in the car – the highest level of any Volvo car to date.
