Nottingham, Milton Keynes, Leeds, Birmingham and Coventry are the five cities with the most rapid and ultra-rapid chargers, according to a study published by EV charge point mapping service Zap-Map.
Nottingham topped the list with a grand total of 122 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers at the end of April, followed by Milton Keynes with 106, revealed the Zap-Map study, published in partnership with Admiral Car Insurance.
“Nottingham may well be leading the charge in this area right now, but it will certainly be interesting to see which city takes the top spot in two years’ time,” said Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder & COO at Zap-Map.
Explaining the need to publish this study, Zap-Map said that there were over 480,000 all-electric cars plying on UK roads, in addition to over 390,000 plug-in hybrids, which required shining a light on the towns and cities that are currently best served for the two quickest types of charging points, known as rapid and ultra-rapid chargers.
Based on the survey results, the Midlands region was a hotspot for charging EVs as quickly as possible.
“Those of us making cross-country trips this summer now know that the Midlands is a great place to recharge the battery,” Clare Egan, Head of Motor Product at Admiral, said.
Admiral’s data showed drivers insured 79% more fully-electric vehicles (and 20% more hybrid vehicles) in 2022 compared with the preceding year. Meanwhile, the number of rapid and ultra-rapid chargers also showed promising growth in recent years, rising 490 per cent to 5,750 by the end of April this year compared to 973 at the end of 2016.
“As Admiral’s own insurance data shows, electric cars are only growing in popularity so public attention should increasingly turn to the UK’s EV charging network,” Egan said. “While most EVs will charge overnight at home, many people driving longer distances will need to charge up as quickly as possible,” she added, explaining the need for identifying the speediest cities to charge EVs.
