16% of all UK car sales in March 2022 were fully electric says New AutoMotive

Drivers are continuing to migrate to pure EVs in the UK with sales up by 63% year-on-year, according to data collected for the month of March by New AutoMotive.

Of all new car sales in March 2022, 16% were fully electric, up from 8% compared to March 2021.

Both the market share of diesel and petrol has dropped in the last 12 months from 72% of sales in March 2021 to 58% last month.

“Our latest car sales data shows that Brits are continuing to make the switch – electric car sales have doubled in the last year and is the fastest growing segment in the market,” said Ciara Cook, New AutoMotive’s research and policy officer.

Breaking the data down by region, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire were the leaders with 40% of all new registrations being EVs.

Maidstone, which covers Kent, came a close second at 38% and Oxfordshire was third at 32%.

From a marque perspective, Tesla “dominated” the EV market selling 12,033 units in March 2022. One in three of all EVs sold were from Tesla and it accounted for 5% of the new car market overall. Kia came a distant second with 2,736 units delivered.

Porsche and Jaguar were the quickest marques to electrify their fleets in March with 673 units and 656 units respectively.

The news comes after SMMT figures showed the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 were the number one and two bestselling cars across all fuel types in March.
