Polestar’s O2 concept car comes with an integrated drone

Swedish luxury automaker Polestar has unveiled its latest electrified vehicle idea dubbed the Polestar O2 concept.

The hard-top convertible has a bespoke aluminium platform developed in-house, showcasing high rigidity and a tight body control. This platform has been adapted from the Polestar 5 saloon, which Polestar revealed last month.

“Polestar O2 is our vision of a new era for sports cars,” said Maximilian Missoni, Polestar’s head of design.

“By mixing the joy of open top driving with the purity of electric mobility, it unlocks a new mix of emotions in a car.”

In terms of its design, the O2 has a low and wide body, compact 2+2 cabin design, minimal overhangs, and a long wheelbase.

To improve aerodynamics, the EV has been fitted with disguised design features.

These include integrated ducts that improve laminar air flow over the wheels and body sides, and rear lights that function as air blades to reduce turbulence behind the car.

All the soft components of the Polestar O2’s interior are made from recycled polyester. This simplifies recycling and reduces weight and waste.

The 02 is also accompanied with a cinematic autonomous drone installed behind the rear seats.

This can be sent into the skies while the vehicle is moving to record the perfect driving sequence.

It can fly at speeds of up to 90km/h and the driver can choose from an atmospheric sequence or a more action-filled sequence. All video clips can then be shared directly from the 15-inch infotainment panel.

“We wanted to emphasise the experience you can have with a car like the Polestar O2 in new and unusual ways,” said Mr Missoni.

“Integrating an autonomous cinematic drone was something that allowed us to push the boundaries on the innovation front. Not needing to stop and off-load the drone before filming, but rather deploying it at speed, is a key benefit to this innovative design.”

Polestar intends to launch three new cars over the next three years, starting in 2022 – each of which has potential to gradually realise some of the ideas presented by these concept cars.
