Kia EV6 named 2022 Car of the Year

The Kia EV6 has been crowned the 2022 Car of the Year at the Car of the Year awards.

It beat competition from the Renault Mégane E-Tech, the Hyundai IONIQ 5, the Peugeot 308, the Škoda Enyaq iV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Cupra Born. Out of the seven cars shortlisted for the top award, six were electric vehicles.

President at Kia Europe, Jason Jeong, said: “It’s a great honour to have won the 2022 Car of the Year with the EV6, the first ever Kia to win this prestigious award.”

“The EV6 is truly a landmark development that’s been designed from the outset to make electric mobility fun, convenient and accessible by combining a highly impressive real-world driving range, ultra-fast charging capabilities, a spacious high-tech interior and a truly rewarding driving experience,” he added. “The EV6 is an exciting sign of what’s still to come in our evolving electrified line-up.”

With a long-distance real-world driving range and ultra-fast charging technology, the EV6 can travel up to 328 miles on a single charge. The car, which is based on Kia’s Electric-Global Platform (E-GMP), needs 18 minutes to charge the advanced battery from 10 to 80 per cent.

A jury made up of 59 motoring journalists from 22 European countries made the decision to crown the EV6 as the 2022 Car of the Year, awarding the electric vehicle 279 points.

Frank Janssen, President, Car of the Year Jury, said: “It's a nice surprise to see the Kia EV6 receive this award. It was about time that the brand and the group were rewarded, as they have worked so hard on this car. Kia's pace of progress is really impressive.”

The EV6 has scooped up a range of awards since its launch last year, including the 2022 What Car? ‘Car of the Year’ award, the ‘Crossover of the Year’ at the TopGear.com 2021 awards, and the 2022 Irish Car of the Year.  It was an Honourable Mention in the Most Promising Newcomer category of the WhichEV Awards.
