Volkswagen officially announces ID.5 electric coupe SUV

Volkswagen has announced its first electric SUV coupé as it expands its electric ID. family.

The new ID.5, which is based on the Volkswagen modular electric drive matrix (MEB), is set to launch in 2022 along with the ID.5 GTX, a sportier version of the model with dual-motor all-wheel drive.

“The ID.5 is electric, sporty and elegant,” said Ralf Brandstätter, brand CEO. “We are breaking into a completely new market segment with this model.”

The ID.5 will be powered by an electric engine in the rear, while the ID.5 GTX will be powered by an e-motor on the front and rear axles. Like the rest of the ID. family, the ID.5 and the ID.5 GTX will be powered by a large, long-range battery. A low drag coefficient of 0.26 and an integrated spoiler in the aerodynamic tailgate will boost battery efficiency and range.

Careful design continues to be an important aspect of the ID. family. The ID.5 will offer a spacious interior despite the coupé shape, with only 12mm less headroom in the back compared to the Volkswagen ID.4. Design features such as the distinctive bumper, the painted door panelling, and the roof line distinguish the ID.5 from its predecessors.

The ID.5 and the ID.5 GTX will be equipped with state-of-the-art software with over-the-air updates, voice control features and driver assistance systems. The ID.5 will come with an optional augmented reality head-up display within the driver’s field of vision, providing information while on the go. Drivers will also be able to access real-time online traffic information, online map updates and information about charging stations via the WeConnect service.

Manufactured in the Volkswagen’s Zwickau plant, the new ID.5 will be carbon-neutral upon delivery.
