The MOKE goes electric

MOKE International has opened reservations for its new all-electric open-top MOKE, with first deliveries scheduled for next summer.

Responding to consistent customer demand, the English company has vowed to go fully electric from 1st January 2022 making it the first heritage marque in the world to do so.

Isobel Dando, chief executive at Moke International said: “MOKE going electric secures the appeal of one of Britain's best loved marques for many generations to come. MOKE’s marriage of fun, personality and open-air thrills will only be enhanced through the performance and silent running of an electric powertrain. We are proud to write a new chapter in one of British automotive folklore’s best love stories.”

Originally created as a vehicle to be parachuted behind enemy lines from an aeroplane, the MOKE gained popularity in the 1960s as the ultimate beachhouse-to-waterfront shuttle, with a glamour-set that included The Beatles, The Beach Boys and Brigette Bardot.

It can sprint to 55km/h in just 4.5 seconds, has a maximum power of 33kW, and a top speed of 100km/h.

This EV is for those looking to traverse the world’s most beautiful beach resorts, possessing a range that would be fit for 5 round trips between Cap-Ferrat and Monaco (144km). Charging takes 4 hours on the Type 2 EU Standard plug.

To reduce the weight and make the vehicle more agile, the design team have used aluminium panels. They have also improved the braking systems, and put in power-steering, as well as heated windscreens.

MOKE International’s production operations had been based between the Midlands and France, but from now, all electric MOKEs will be manufactured in the UK at a state-of-the-art facility operated by the Fablink Group, in Northamptonshire.

Prices start at £29,150 plus VAT for the vehicle, which can be ordered in Right or Left Hand Drive.
