October was another great month for greener options as a JATO report has highlighted that EVs including pure electrics (BEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), pure hybrids (HEV) and mild hybrids have seen extremely positive results.
Last month, 302,587 EVs were registered, taking 26.8% of the total market share. For a second month running, EVs outsold diesel cars, which had a falling market share of 26.3%. When compared to this period last year, EVs have seen a huge growth of 153%, in part due to the success and popularity of mild-hybrid car, such as the Ford Puma and the Fiat 500.
Pure electric cars (BEV) saw an incredible increase of 197%, with 71,800 units sold in October. Growth was driven by new launches, including the Volkswagen ID.3, which registered 10,590 units in Europe, making it the best-selling BEV. Volkswagen Group became Europe’s biggest producer of EVs in October, comprising of 25% of the market registrations. Interestingly, the German manufacturer posted a bigger market share in the BEV (29%) sector than other EV sectors.
In second place, there is another best-seller, the compact Renault Zoe with 9,778 units sold. Also, on the podium there is the Hyundai Kona with 5,261 cars sold.
Overall, it has been a tough year for registrations as statistics show year-to-date registrations falling by 27% to 9.7 million units and in October the total of new cars fell by 7.0% to 1,127,624 units.
Lastly, it is interesting to note that there is no Tesla model in the top 10 of most sold electric vehicles in Europe, proving that it has been a tough month for Musk’s company.
