MG takes electric closer to mainstream affordability with £25k MG5 EV

The MG5 EV will finally be available to customers from October 2020, adding another keenly priced electric vehicle model to MG’s fleet.

The MG5 is powered by a 115kW electric motor (equivalent to 156PS) providing an acceleration of 0-60mph in just over eight seconds, with a 52.2kWh Lithium-Ion battery pack that can be charged from zero to 80% in just 50 minutes using a rapid charger. It will have a decent range of 214 miles in normal day-to-day use. This rises to 276 miles if the car is used solely for urban driving, as confirmed by the WLTP City driving cycle.

The model will also come with a very nice 7 year/80,000-mile fully transferable warranty as standard. But perhaps the biggest news is the low price, which starts at just £24,495 after the Plug-In Car Grant (currently £3,000) and users will benefit from 0% Benefit-in-Kind tax during the 2020-21 tax year, or 1% in 2021-22.

The company is convinced that this model has the potential to be a homerun, according to Daniel Gregorious, MG’s Head of Sales & Marketing.

“With a big boot, a big range and a small price tag, we really believe that the MG5 EV is a real breakthrough in terms of value-for-money, practical EVs in the UK,” he said.

Alongside the 5, MG will also launch in October MG’s first model to feature a Plug-in Hybrid drivetrain, the HS Plug-in SUV, using the existing model’s 1.5-litre turbocharged engine working in tandem with a 90kW electric motor to give an EV-only range of 32 miles with zero tailpipe emissions.

The Iconic British brand MG, which is now owned by Chinese SAIC, is fully committing to a greener future. After the critical and sales success of the MG ZS EV SUV, we can see the MG5 EV being an even better prospect, bringing the price of entry to electric driving even lower.
