Tesla batteries have powered UK national grid through pandemic

Tesla and its megapacks have been instrumental in alleviating the cost of the national grid through the pandemic, according to a report by Bloomberg.

As we are all aware, the lockdown has changed how we live our lives, forcing millions of people to work from home. As a direct consequence of this sudden shift, it is reported that the UK National Grid had £718 million ($932 million) in balancing costs from March to July, a 39% increase over the last year.

In July, Tesla deployed 6 Megapacks for 15 MWh of capacity. These structures are basically gigantic lithium-ion batteries, as the name suggests. The project is meant to help stabilise the grid during peak times. For the first time this week, a Tesla Megapack project has been used by the National Grid to help balance the power supply and alleviate those costs.

This is not the first time that we have seen such projects being extremely helpful as just a year ago, Musk built the world’s largest lithium-ion battery in South Australia, in order to help the region with its frequent blackouts.

The Californian company prides itself that the megapack “requires 40% less space and 10 times fewer parts than current systems on the market. As a result, this high-density, modular system can be installed 10 times faster than current systems.”

Once again, Musk is in the business of making people’s lives a little easier.
