Flying cars have been somewhat of a fantasy for many, but some manufacturers such as AeroMobil, have already designed a hybrid flying machine. Now, Porsche and Boeing want a piece of the action too. In a new-formed partnership, the two companies alongside one of Boeing subsidiaries, Aurora Flight Sciences, are looking to create a fully electric vehicle that is capable of vertical take-off and landing or eVTOL for short.

It's understood that the two companies have formed a partnership to create an international team that'll engineer and test an eVTOL. There's currently no ETA on the project; Porsche Consulting forecasts “the urban air mobility market will pick up speed after 2025”.

“Porsche is looking to enhance its scope as a sports car manufacturer by becoming a leading brand for premium mobility. In the longer term, this could mean moving into the third dimension of travel,” says Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “We are combining the strengths of two leading global companies to address a potential key market segment of the future.”

“This collaboration builds on our efforts to develop a safe and efficient new mobility ecosystem, and provides an opportunity to investigate the development of a premium urban air mobility vehicle with a leading automotive brand,” said Steve Nordlund, Vice President and General Manager of Boeing NeXt.

It's an exciting partnership that could see some radical designs from both companies. With Boeing's expertise in the aerospace industry and Porsche's fine-tuned detail in the automotive space, this could be the kick that's needed to create the next-gen vehicle.

The news of the partnership comes after Porsche revealed more details about its first all-electric vehicle, the Taycan.
