Mercedes launches EQ version of the G Wagon – the G580

Has the Shah of Iran's concept car ever been so fancy?

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the all-new G580 with EQ Technology, marking a significant evolution of its iconic off-road model into the EV arena. The G580 retains the distinctive silhouette and robust design features of the traditional G Wagon, now incorporates advanced electric drivetrain technology, offering zero CO₂ emissions. Useful when you consider that the supplied 116kWh battery gets used up at a rate of 2 and 2.2 miles per kWh. Oh, and then there's the price. The G580 will set you back around £140,000 for the standard model – but there is a special launch edition which is closer to £170,000.

Since its conception in 1979 by Shah Reza Pahlavi, the G Wagon has been known for its exceptional off-road capabilities. The latest iteration, the electric G580, continues this legacy while integrating sustainable technology. Built on a modified ladder frame to accommodate a 116 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery, the vehicle offers a range of up to 272 miles according to the WLTP standard. This integration not only maintains a low centre of gravity but also enhances vehicle rigidity and safety, with the battery protected by a torsion-resistant casing and underbody armour made from a mix of durable materials including carbon.

The electric G Wagon is equipped with four individually controlled electric motors located near the wheels, each housed within the frame. These motors provide a combined output of 432 kW and a torque of 1,164 Nm, facilitating dynamic off-road and on-road performance. The EV version introduces new off-road functionalities such as G-TURN, G-STEERING, and an intelligent off-road crawl function, enhancing its capability on challenging terrains.

Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Chief Technology Officer, emphasised the significance of the new model, “Throughout its more than 45-year history, the G-Class has always adopted the most modern drive technologies available. This transition to electric drive is a natural evolution that aligns with our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”

The all-new electric G Wagon also features redesigned aerodynamics. A slightly raised bonnet, new A-pillar trim, a spoiler lip on the roof, and ‘air curtains' in the rear wheel-arch flares contribute to improved aerodynamics and noise reduction inside the cabin. These enhancements help maintain the vehicle's legendary design ethos while improving its environmental footprint.

Inside, the vehicle comes equipped with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch display offering touch controls and various personalised functions. The cabin also includes luxurious touches like ambient lighting, temperature-controlled cup holders, and a Burmester 3D surround sound system, enhancing the overall passenger experience.

Charging the G580 is efficient and adaptable, with a capability of using both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). An on-board charger facilitates up to 11 kW charging with AC, while the DC fast-charging system can charge the battery from 10% to 80% in about 32 minutes. The vehicle also offers three charging programmes – Standard, Work and Home – that can adjust settings based on the vehicle’s location and the user’s scheduling needs.

Navigation with Electric Intelligence is another standout feature, planning routes that include charging stops optimised for duration and convenience, considering various factors such as topography, anticipated traffic conditions, and the driver's unique driving style. This system dynamically adjusts to real-time driving and road conditions, ensuring an efficient and hassle-free journey.

The all-new G580 maintains formidable off-road capabilities, with a ground clearance of 250 mm and the ability to ford depths of up to 850 mm. Its stability is ensured even on steep side slopes of up to 35 degrees, and it offers a gradeability of 100% on suitable surfaces. These features are complemented by ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT, which allows the driver to adjust vehicle settings for different terrains and preferences, enhancing both comfort and performance.

Safety and assistance systems are extensively integrated, featuring Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Steering Assist, Active Brake Assist, and PRE-SAFE technologies, among others. These systems collectively enhance driver awareness, assist in maintaining safe driving practices, and provide crucial interventions during potential collision scenarios.

With its combination of traditional off-road prowess and advanced electric technology, the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology redefines the capabilities of luxury electric off-roaders, offering a blend of performance, sustainability and cutting-edge features that set new standards in the segment. Bullet-proof mods will no doubt follow.
