Vauxhall reveals all-electric Frontera

Will this SUV land in the UK market for less than £30,000?

In a significant development for the UK automotive market, Vauxhall has unveiled the latest addition to its line-up, the Frontera C-SUV, marking a notable step in the brand's commitment to electrification. Set to cater to a diverse customer base, the new Frontera will be offered in both a battery-electric model and a 48-volt hybrid version, presenting a blend of efficiency and performance.

The Frontera's design aims to stand out with its rugged aesthetic, embodying Vauxhall's contemporary design language. That said, we still prefer the original Frontera's rugged good looks (borrowed from the Isuzu Trooper) and it would have been interesting to see Vauxhall follow that 90's look/feel, instead of the ‘me-too' looks of recent Vauxhall designs. Like the original Toyota Rav4, the 90's Frontera had the look of, “Let's head to the beach' written all over it. That's not to say that this modern re-working isn't nice looking, but we feel this is a missed opportunity to ‘do something different'.

The vehicle's exterior features a bold silhouette accentuated by pronounced wheel arches and the distinctive Vauxhall Vizor at the front. This unique element integrates the Eco LED headlamps and the iconic central Vauxhall griffin logo, enhancing the SUV's modern and robust appearance.

Given the standardised Stellantis battery/motor/drive set up – and the anticipated ‘competitive price point' – we would anticipate a WLTP range close to 220 miles. That will likely tie into a top speed south of 95mph and a 0-60 of just over 9 seconds. Anyone expecting to be able to tow 2,000kg like the original Frontera, will likely be disappointed.

James Taylor, Managing Director at Vauxhall, emphasised the Frontera's suitability for both urban and suburban settings, highlighting its design, spaciousness, and innovative features as key factors that distinguish it in the competitive SUV market.

The interior of the Frontera is designed with comfort and practicality in mind. Occupants are greeted by a spacious cabin enhanced by dual widescreen displays and an ergonomically designed seating arrangement. The patented Intelli-Seat feature in the front seats, which includes a slot to alleviate tailbone pressure, promises unparalleled comfort, especially on longer journeys. Moreover, the use of sustainable materials for the seat fabrics underscores Vauxhall's commitment to environmental responsibility.

Technology and convenience are at the forefront of the Frontera's design, with features like wireless charging, additional USB ports, and clever storage solutions for mobile devices. The vehicle's infotainment system is designed to minimise digital stress, offering a user-friendly interface that ensures connectivity without unnecessary distractions.

The Frontera does not compromise on space, offering up to 1,600 litres of luggage capacity when the back seats are folded down. Its practicality is further enhanced by optional functional roof rails, allowing for additional cargo space for those with active lifestyles.

Vauxhall's focus on electrification is evident in the Frontera's powertrain options. Customers can choose between the zero-emission electric variant and the efficient hybrid model, catering to varying preferences and needs. This move aligns with Vauxhall's broader strategy to offer a fully electric version of every model in its line-up by the end of 2024, reinforcing the brand's leadership in vehicle electrification.

The introduction of the Frontera is a clear indication of Vauxhall's commitment to combining innovation with sustainability. As the automotive industry moves towards a greener future, the Frontera stands as a testament to Vauxhall's dedication to providing environmentally responsible yet practical and stylish vehicles. With the Frontera, Vauxhall continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the electrified vehicle market, offering a compelling option for those seeking a sustainable, efficient, and versatile SUV.
