While we can all appreciate the marketing-speak that Fisker uses to label its Ocean EV as ‘the most emotional and sustainable electric vehicle’, it’s still nice to know that it passed a range of industry standard safety tests with flying colours. Armed with its NCAP Five Star Rating, the Ocean has now proven its safety and range credentials – which means it only needs a Californian Air Resources Board and it will be ready for the market.
That certificate is not needed for Europe however, so (according to CEO Henrik Fisker), the company can begin ramping up production on 20th April 2023, with a view to making its first deliveries to Europe. Good news for customers like ONTO who placed an order worth £21 million, as far back as May 2021.
The standard Fisker Ocean is expected to have a range of close to 350 miles, but with the maximum possible battery and ‘extreme’ physical configuration, it managed a WLTP certification of 440 miles. While WhichEV research suggests that most EV drivers are happy to take a break around the 150 mile mark, there will always be those who want to try and drive from London to Dusseldorf without stopping.
“This strategy ensures we can maintain a steady production ramp and have a sufficient quantity of vehicles ready for initial deliveries in Europe and the US while avoiding the cost of vehicle storage until approvals arrive,” Henrik Fisker said. “Homologating simultaneously places an extra workload on our teams, but we are utilizing the benefits of an agile organization by opportunistically shifting our plans and delivering vehicles in Europe first. I appreciate the patience of our reservation holders and am excited to get vehicles in the hands of our customers.”
When the Ocean does run out of power, the company has partnered with Deftpower to provide easy access to a European-wide network of more than 425,000 public charging points – across 900 different charging operators – available through the Fisker Flex Charge app.
To get new users kick-started with their car, if you take delivery of your Ocean before 31st March 2024, then you will also get free charging credits for a year on the Allego network. Right now, there is limited availability in the UK, although there are size 300kW chargers at the Milton Keynes Arena and 25 locations in the South East of England. Across Europe, you can claim your free charging from any of 40,000 Allego charge points.

In terms of pricing, the Fisker Ocean Sport in plain white with minimal options, starts at just £35,970 with a fully-loaded launch edition Fisker Ocean One arriving at a much beefier £60,880.
