Tarmac places order for UK’s first ever battery electric mixer truck

One of the UK’s biggest construction solutions businesses, Tarmac, has just placed an order for the first ever battery electric mixer truck in the UK.

This comes after a partnership between Tarmac and Renault Trucks resulting in this historic deal. Expected to arrive in Autumn 2022, Tarmac will put this truck through its paces working at its Washwood Heath site in Birmingham, delivering vital building materials to customers in the West Midlands.

Tarmac also aims to work very closely with Renault Trucks and Total Vehicle Solutions (TVS) to form the next generation of mixers. As the construction company already obtains all its energy from clean energy sources, the new truck will act as a carbon neutral option.

The truck will have an indicative range of around 120km and will have the ability to fast charge within 1.5-2 hours. The motor has an output of 265kWh and 850 Nm of torque and is guaranteed to run for at least ten years.

“This order marks the first practical step towards a whole fleet transition to electric mixers and demonstrates our commitment to lead by example as we continue to turn our net zero ambitions into actions,” said John Anderson, Logistics director at Tarmac.

Renault also makes an electric rubbish truck.

The 26-ton Renault Trucks E-Tech D Wide will have many safety features thanks to a low centre of gravity, improving stability. The speed of the drum rotation is also computer-controlled to optimise energy consumption for loading, unloading and transit of different types of mix.

Tarmac is in charge of one of the UK’s biggest HGV fleets and plans to decarbonise its network of over 2,000 corporate cars and vans by swapping them all with electric vehicles by 2030.
