Polestar 5 will be faster, lighter and safer thanks to new bespoke aluminium platform

Swedish premium EV manufacturer Polestar has revealed its forthcoming Polestar 5 saloon will be built on a new aluminium platform that will speed up the production process, improve rigidity and make the EV lighter.

The aluminium platform has been developed in-house by a team of more than 280 engineers from Polestar’s UK R&D centre in Coventry.

It is expected to weigh less than that of cars in smaller segments, improving vehicle efficiency, speed, range, and dynamic responsiveness.

It will also deliver leading safety levels and drive faster production as the process involves developing both the body and platform in unison.

“Our UK R&D team is one of Polestar’s greatest assets,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar’s chief executive.

“Their mix of engineering and technological expertise enables us to develop advanced, light-weight sports car technology with a creative mindset and a spirit that embraces innovative engineering. This will set Polestar apart in the years to come.”

The UK R&D unit is due increase to around 500 engineers in the coming months, which will mean development of the Polestar 5 can continue at pace.

“We knew we wanted this car to be light-weight, we knew we wanted high quality and we knew we wanted it quickly,” said Pete Allen, head of Polestar UK R&D.

“This architecture delivers outstanding dynamic and safety attributes, with low investment technology applicable to high production volumes.”

Polestar will continue to drip-feed more details of the Polestar 5 in its YouTube documentary series “Precept: From Concept to Car”.

This announcement looks set to strengthen Polestar’s position ahead of its business combination with Gores Guggenheim – a deal expected to close in the first half of this year.
