Volvo and Polestar introduce Range Assistant app to improve EV efficiency

Volvo and Polestar have released a new Range Assistant in-car app for drivers of the pure electric Volve XC40 Recharge Twin AWD and Polestar 2.

The over-the-air software update, developed exclusively for Volvo and Polestar customers, helps drivers optimise their available range, and provides advice on driving style from an efficiency perspective.

Accessed through the Android-powered infotainment system, drivers get an accurate view of the estimated remaining driving range and real-time energy consumption, and it helps them understand key factors that affect their driving range.

Within the app is a range optimiser feature that automatically adjusts the climate system to improve driving range, which is particularly useful for longer trips because it reduces the need to make charging stops.

The app is currently in a beta version and Volvo says it will add additional features before its full release, including the ability to coach drivers on their driving style and speed, to maximise the vehicles distance.

Sanela Ibrovic, head of connected experience at Volvo Cars, said: “Through in-house development of software and over-the-air updates, we can constantly improve our cars and make sure that your electric Volvo stays fresh. The Range Assistant app is a great example of how quick development and deployment of new features can improve the Volvo customer experience every day.”

Along with the new app, owners of these EVs can also expect increased range from smart battery management improvements and regeneration performance. Plus, it has a “smarter timer to pre-condition the batteries.” For example, when you input a public charging station into Google Maps, the batteries will be preconditioned to be ready for the maximum charging speed once you arrive.

Other updates in the latest software release include new information about cold climate impact on battery range, as well as advances to the safety systems.

All applicable models can expect to have the latest software update by the end of October.
