Chinese EV market hits record sales despite grant reductions

November was a great month for the Chinese electric vehicle market as it saw record sales numbers.

Plugin vehicles have grown by 138 percent year over year to a record 198,000 units, while plugin hybrids (PHEVs) saw a 164 percent increase from last year. Also, battery electric vehicles (BEV) had an amazing month as their sales grew by 134 percent.

Moreover, last month, plugin share reached a record 8.6 percent pulling the 2020 share to 5.9 percent. Meanwhile BEVs had a 7.2 percent share last month. Also, December is set to create yet another record score with PEVs share to end north of the 6 percent mark. This is all despite a 10% reduction in subsidies in 2020.

The most sold vehicle on the market was the incredibly frugal Wuling HongGuang Mini EV with more than 33,000 new registrations solely last month. These numbers do not come as a surprise as we reported few months ago how this car is rather inexpensive, with a starting price of only $4,200.

This car is only 2,917 mm (114.8in) long, 1,493 mm (58.8in) wide, 1,621 mm (63.8in) high, and with a 1,940 mm (76.4in) wheelbase, which makes it a very compact vehicle, scarcely bigger than the Citroen Ami. It is powered by a modest 13.8 kWh battery pack and a motor that produces a mere 27 hp for a top speed of 62 mph. On a single charge it will have a range of 124 miles, which is perfect for urban life.

Trailing by more than 10,000 units there is the Tesla Model 3, which has hit a record of 21,606 units sold last month. We reported just few weeks ago that Tesla has confirmed that the new generation of the Model 3 will be equipped with a new 82 kWh battery pack and will boast a new record range of 360 miles.

The podium is completed by the Great Wall ORA R1 Black Cat, which is a compact hatchback based on the Mini Electric platform. The car is powered by an electric motor that produces 143 hp (107 kW). The car has a top speed of 93 mph and has 501 km (310 miles) of NEDC range.

However, Tesla has been the most sold EV on the market from January to November with over 116,000 units followed by the Wuling HongGuang Mini with over 85,000 cars sold. The third most sold EV of the year is Gac Aion S, which boasts an NEDC range of 317 miles (510km), with 40,000 registrations.

The Wuling HongGuang Mini is expected to take over Tesla’s crown as the most sold EV in China thanks to the recent amazing sales.
