EVs sold more than diesels in Europe in September

The electric revolution is real, and it is happening now as statistics show that in September for the first time ever European registrations for electrified vehicles overtook diesel ones.

JATO Dynamics analysed the data from 27 markets in Europe showing that the total number of electrified cars registered in September (encompassing pure electric, plug-in hybrids, full hybrids and mild hybrids) was higher than the number of registrations for diesel cars.

Demand for gasoline and diesel cars shows double-digit drops compared to September 2019 while the volume of EVs increased by 139% to 327,800 units. This is the first time ever for greener options to have surpassed the 300,000 mark.

These results show that there is an important transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles and the electric revolution is well on the way, according Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics

“The shift from ICEs to EVs is finally taking place,” he said. “Although this is largely down to government policies and incentives, consumers are also now ready to adopt these new technologies.”

Tesla still holds the crown of most sold electric vehicle in Europe, although its numbers have fallen by 5%. However, it is noticeable how Volkswagen and Renault saw increases of 352% and 211% respectively.  These massive increases are due to the fact that the German automaker has finally launched its new electric vehicle the ID.3 and the French manufacturer is having a great year thanks to its absolute hit, the ZOE.

Overall, the market posted a timid growth of a mere 1.2% in September, to almost 1.3 million passenger cars.
