UK car sales in June see another huge increase for EVs

The car industry has been struggling in this first half of 2020 due to the pandemic, as data shows that petrol engines have seen a 52% decrease in sales and diesels have been down 64% year-on-year. However, compared to last June there has been an incredible rise in the sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV), with a huge increase of 261.8%.

The month of June is not to be considered just a fluke. According to SMMT car registrations data there has been a 158% yearly increase in EV sales which corresponds to a 4.7% of the market share.

UK new car registrations fell 34.9% in June, according to figures as the market began a tentative restart after more than two months of lockdown. The drop was an improvement on May’s 89% wipe-out but, with 145,377 new cars registrations, this still represented a significant decline of 78,044 compared with June of last year.

It is also interesting to note that among the top 10 best sellers of the month of June 2020, the Tesla Model 3 sits at 9th place with 2,517 units sold. However, no EV has made it yet into the yearly Top 10 sales.

The electric vehicle market is currently booming, and it seems that it will keep growing exponentially. As we previously reported, sales have kept growing massively year-on-year for pure electric designs.

At WhichEV, we are glad to see that the strong trend towards EVs has not stopped and seems to keep expanding. If the sales keep going at this rate soon all-electric vehicles will become a conspicuous share of the auto market.
