Porsche Taycan Turbo S beats Tesla Model S P100D in drag race

A video has emerged on YouTube showing the all-new Porsche Taycan Turbo S beating the Tesla Model S P100D in a drag race. The video was ‘taken' from the German TV show ‘Auto Mobil', where the presenters tested straight-line speeds and handling characteristics.

The video has been met with a lot of criticism from Tesla devotees, as they claimed the P100D wasn't set on Ludicrous mode, whereby the Tesla was slower to get off the mark than the Taycan.

A speedometer video was then released to show the differences between the two cars. The Taycan reaches 0-100kph in just 2.66s; 0-200mph in 8.65s and 0-250kph in 13.52s. Meanwhile, the Tesla does 2.87s, 11.27s and 22.53s, respectively.

However, these numbers don't seem to add up to the manufacturers' claims: on Porsche's website, the £138,826 Turbo S has a claimed 0-100kph of 2.8s, which is slower than what the 2.66s achieved by the presenters of the German TV show. Likewise, Tesla quotes a 0-60mph (0-97kph) of 2.4s for the £92,300 P100D, whereas the presenters achieved 2.87s. In fact, the Tesla has even managed to get down to 2.28s.

Now we can't be certain as to why this is the case but nevertheless makes for some tasty comparisons. We can't wait to see more videos on the two vehicles, namely from owners.

Elsewhere the cars were tested for their handling characteristics, and here, the Auto Mobil presenters found that the Taycan Turbo S was far more reliable at handling corners at speed. Unlike, straight-line speeds, this test shouldn't come as a surprise as the Taycan is more aerodynamic than the Model S.

No matter the results, it's great to see some competition building up for the P100D – it has long reigned at the top of the all-electric market and it's taken years for the others to catch up. Let's not forget, however, Tesla has the Roadster coming out and that should be the new king of the all-electric world.
