BYD has showcased its ultra-fast FLASH Charging technology in the United Kingdom for the first time, claiming a breakthrough that could significantly reduce one of the last remaining barriers to mainstream electric vehicle adoption: charging time.
At a demonstration held at the company’s UK headquarters in Uxbridge, attended by media, industry figures and VIP guests, BYD revealed a charging system capable of delivering up to 1,500kW through a single connector when paired with the latest generation of its Blade Battery technology. The company says the system can take a battery from five to 70 per cent charge in just five minutes, reach 97 per cent charge in nine minutes, and maintain impressive charging performance even in extreme cold conditions.
The event marks the first public demonstration of FLASH Charging in the UK and forms part of BYD’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in Europe’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle market.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li described the technology as a major milestone for the company and for the wider EV sector.
“The first demonstration of FLASH Charging in the UK is another significant landmark for the technology,” said Li. “FLASH Charging’s ability to make our second-generation Blade Battery ready in five minutes, full in nine minutes, and to add just three minutes in cold weather sets a new standard for the future of premium mobility.”
Charging times approach conventional refuelling
The headline figures presented by BYD are among the most ambitious yet announced by any global EV manufacturer.

The company has adopted the slogan “Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3” to summarise the system’s capabilities. According to BYD, a vehicle equipped with the latest Blade Battery 2.0 can charge from five to 70 per cent in five minutes, while a charge from 10 to 97 per cent can be completed in nine minutes. Even at temperatures as low as -30°C, BYD says a 20 to 97 per cent charge can be achieved in just 12 minutes.
If those figures can be replicated consistently in real-world conditions, they would bring EV charging times much closer to the experience of refuelling an internal combustion engine vehicle, an issue that continues to influence buying decisions among some motorists considering a switch to electric.
The demonstration vehicle for the event was the DENZA Z9 GT, the premium electric shooting brake that will become the first UK-market model capable of accepting FLASH Charging. Based on its WLTP combined range of 372 miles, BYD says a five-minute charge can add approximately 223 miles of range, while a nine-minute charging session can add around 323 miles.
Such figures would make long-distance electric travel considerably more convenient, particularly for drivers covering high annual mileages or relying on public charging infrastructure.
Blade Battery 2.0 at the heart of the system
FLASH Charging has been developed in conjunction with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, an evolution of the battery technology that helped establish the company as one of the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers.
BYD has long emphasised the importance of integrating battery development, vehicle engineering and charging technology under one roof. The company manufactures many of its own core EV components, including batteries, electric motors, power electronics and automotive semiconductors.
The Blade Battery has become one of BYD’s most recognisable technologies, helping the company expand rapidly in China and overseas markets. The latest generation is designed not only to improve energy density and safety, but also to withstand the extreme charging rates required by FLASH Charging.
The ability to accept charging power of up to 1,500kW places the system well beyond the capabilities of today’s fastest public chargers in the UK, which currently top out at around 350kW. While real-world charging performance will depend on numerous factors including battery state of charge, temperature and charger availability, the figures indicate the direction in which next-generation EV infrastructure is moving.
Infrastructure designed for rapid deployment
One of the most notable aspects of the announcement is BYD’s claim that FLASH Charging does not require dramatically larger grid connections than existing high-power charging installations.
Instead, energy is stored locally using on-site battery storage systems. These battery units are gradually replenished from the grid during periods of lower demand and can then discharge large amounts of power when a vehicle plugs in.
According to BYD, the charging installations require grid connections ranging from as little as 100kW to around 560kW depending on demand, despite delivering peak charging power of up to 1,500kW to vehicles.
This approach could help accelerate deployment by avoiding lengthy and expensive grid upgrades that often delay the installation of high-power charging infrastructure.
As a result, BYD says rollout plans are already underway. The company intends to install 300 FLASH Charging units by the end of 2026 across DENZA retail locations and other sites.
Although the company has not yet confirmed specific UK deployment locations beyond the demonstration site, the commitment suggests that a wider charging ecosystem will accompany the arrival of FLASH-capable vehicles in Europe.
Improving the charging experience
Beyond headline charging speeds, BYD also highlighted the design of the charging hardware itself.

The FLASH Charging unit features a distinctive T-shaped structure incorporating two charging cables suspended vertically from rails. According to the company, this arrangement makes the charging process easier regardless of where a vehicle’s charge port is positioned.
The design also prevents charging cables from dragging on the ground, reducing exposure to dirt, water and wear while improving usability for customers.
While less dramatic than the charging figures themselves, user experience has become an increasingly important battleground for charging providers as EV adoption continues to grow.
Strategic importance for DENZA’s UK arrival
The demonstration also underlines the importance of DENZA within BYD’s European strategy. Originally established as a premium brand in China, DENZA is preparing for expansion into European markets including the UK. The Z9 GT, which was used to showcase FLASH Charging, is expected to serve as a technology flagship for the brand.

Li positioned the charging system as a core component of DENZA’s premium proposition. “Our DENZA brand is driven by technology that inspires, and witnessing FLASH Charging today, as shown by the Z9 GT, is truly inspirational,” she said.
The combination of ultra-fast charging, long driving range and premium positioning is intended to help DENZA compete against established European luxury manufacturers as well as emerging premium EV rivals from China.
Raising the bar for the next generation of EVs
The UK demonstration comes at a time when competition among EV manufacturers is increasingly focused on charging performance as much as vehicle range.
Over the past decade, battery capacities have grown steadily and public charging networks have expanded significantly. However, charging times remain one of the most frequently cited concerns among consumers who have yet to make the transition to electric mobility.
By presenting a system capable of adding hundreds of miles of range in minutes rather than tens of minutes, BYD is attempting to redefine expectations for electric vehicle ownership.
Whether FLASH Charging becomes widely available at scale remains to be seen, but the technology demonstrated in Uxbridge signals the direction in which the industry is heading. If BYD can deliver its promised network rollout and bring FLASH-capable vehicles such as the DENZA Z9 GT to market on schedule, ultra-fast charging could soon become a key competitive differentiator in the next phase of the global EV race.
