The Kia EV2 has delivered the strongest real-world range performance among compact and mid-size electric vehicles in the latest Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF) Summer El Prix test, exceeding its official WLTP range figure and reinforcing the model's credentials ahead of its wider European rollout.
According to Kia, the standard-range EV2 equipped with a 42.2kWh battery achieved 325km of driving range during the independent test, surpassing its official WLTP combined range of 308km by 17km. The result represents more than 105% of its certified range figure and was the best performance recorded among all four- and five-seat compact and mid-size electric vehicles participating in the event.
The result comes from the NAF Summer El Prix, widely regarded as the world's largest independent electric vehicle test. Organised jointly by the Norwegian Automobile Federation and automotive publication Motor, the event evaluates electric vehicles under identical real-world driving and charging conditions, providing consumers with a benchmark that often differs from laboratory-based WLTP measurements.
Kia also entered a long-range EV2 GT-Line prototype into the event. Although the vehicle's results were not included in the official NAF rankings because it remains a prototype, it completed the route under the same conditions and recorded 428km of range. Equipped with a 61.0kWh battery pack and 19-inch wheels, the prototype exceeded its anticipated WLTP figure of 418km, achieving more than 102% of its expected certified range. Kia said the vehicle recorded average energy consumption of 12.4kWh/100km during the test.
The performance is particularly notable because real-world EV range often falls below official WLTP figures. While laboratory testing provides a standardised basis for comparison, factors such as weather, terrain, driving style and traffic conditions frequently reduce achievable range in everyday use. The EV2's ability to exceed its official figures suggests a highly efficient powertrain and battery management strategy.

The latest result follows another strong showing for the EV2 in the NAF Winter El Prix held earlier this year. During what Kia described as the coldest edition of the event on record, the EV2 GT-Line long-range prototype covered 310.6km, highlighting the vehicle's ability to maintain competitive efficiency even in demanding low-temperature conditions. Together, the winter and summer test performances provide evidence of consistent behaviour across dramatically different climates.
For prospective EV buyers, consistency across seasons remains a key concern. Cold weather can significantly reduce battery performance and available driving range, particularly in northern European markets. Manufacturers that demonstrate stable efficiency across both winter and summer testing environments are likely to gain an advantage as consumers increasingly scrutinise real-world performance rather than headline WLTP figures.
The EV2 occupies a strategically important position within Kia's growing electric vehicle portfolio. As the company's smallest dedicated EV to date, the model enters the highly competitive B-segment SUV category, one of Europe's largest vehicle sectors. Kia intends the EV2 to serve as a primary household vehicle rather than simply an urban commuter, making range efficiency and charging convenience central elements of its appeal.
Both battery versions utilise a 400V electrical architecture. Kia claims the standard-range model can recharge from 10% to 80% state of charge in approximately 29 minutes under optimal DC fast-charging conditions, while the larger-battery long-range variant requires around 30 minutes. Customers will also gain access to more than one million charging points across 27 European countries through the Kia Charge network.
The EV2 also plays a significant role in Kia's European manufacturing strategy. Production of the standard-range 42.2kWh version is already underway at Kia AutoLand Slovakia in Žilina, making the EV2 the second dedicated electric model produced at the facility. Production of the 61.0kWh long-range version and GT-Line variants is scheduled to begin during June 2026.
The launch comes at a time when competition in the affordable electric SUV segment is intensifying. Manufacturers across Europe and China are increasingly targeting smaller, lower-cost EVs as the market shifts from early adopters towards mainstream buyers. Vehicles capable of combining competitive pricing, practical range and fast charging are expected to be critical to accelerating EV adoption across the continent.
Independent testing programmes such as the NAF El Prix have become increasingly influential in that process. Unlike manufacturer-led demonstrations, the tests place vehicles from multiple brands on identical routes and under the same environmental conditions. As a result, they are often regarded by consumers as one of the most reliable indicators of how an electric vehicle will perform outside controlled laboratory settings.

For Kia, the EV2's performance provides a strong endorsement of the model's engineering ahead of full market availability. The fact that both the standard-range production vehicle and long-range prototype exceeded their respective WLTP targets suggests that the company has prioritised efficiency alongside affordability.
With the compact electric SUV segment expected to become one of Europe's most fiercely contested categories over the next several years, Kia's latest NAF result offers an early indication that the EV2 could emerge as one of the benchmark vehicles for real-world efficiency. If the production long-range model delivers similar results when official certification is completed later this year, the EV2 may prove particularly attractive to buyers seeking maximum range from a relatively modest battery capacity.
Formal WLTP figures for the long-range EV2 are expected to be released during the third quarter of 2026. Until then, the NAF summer test result provides one of the clearest indications yet of how Kia's newest entry-level electric SUV is likely to perform in everyday driving conditions.
