Smart Returns to its Roots: Concept #2 Reinvents the Iconic Two-Seater for the Electric Age

In the rapidly evolving landscape of urban mobility, few names carry as much historical weight as smart. On 22 April 2026, at a high-octane Global Brand Event in Beijing, the contemporary premium EV manufacturer officially turned the page to its most nostalgic yet forward-looking chapter yet. Under the evocative motto “Change of Perspectives,” the brand took the wraps off the smart Concept #2, a striking design study that serves as the first physical preview of the upcoming all-electric smart #2.

For fans of the original city-slicker, the message is clear: the two-seater is back, it is electric, and it is bolder than ever.

A Return to the Two-Seater Icon

Since its transition into a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Geely Holding Group, smart has successfully expanded into larger segments with the #1, #3, and the #5. However, the debut of the Concept #2 marks a spiritual homecoming. Engineered on smart’s proprietary, newly developed Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), the vehicle is a direct response to the enduring demand for ultra-compact urban transport.

The Concept #2 isn't merely a nostalgic trip; it is a complete reinvention of the “fortwo” philosophy. Wolfgang Ufer, CEO of smart Europe, noted during the premiere that the vehicle is shaped specifically by the way European customers move — emphasising agility and efficiency.

Function Becomes Fashion: The Design Language

Styled exclusively by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, the Concept #2 introduces a design lens described as “Function becomes Fashion”. The aesthetic moves away from the utilitarian “bubble” look of the past, opting instead for a “Pure” and “Unexpected” silhouette.

The show car displayed in Beijing features a sophisticated matte white and warm gold two-tone palette, complemented by fine leather hardware. One of the most intriguing design choices is the use of translucent surfaces that reveal hidden details beneath, a nod to the brand’s “Unexpected” design pillar. Despite its diminutive 2,792mm length, the “wheels-at-the-corners” setup ensures the interior feels anything but cramped, maximizing every millimetre of the wheelbase for passenger comfort.

Cutting-Edge Performance in a Compact Package

While the original smart cars were often criticized for their jerky transmissions, the upcoming production #2 aims to set new standards for modern electric performance.

The ECA platform allows for technical specifications that were once unthinkable for a car of this size:

  • Electric Range: An envisioned range of nearly 300 kilometres.

  • Rapid Charging: DC fast-charging capabilities designed to take the battery from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes.

  • Manoeuvrability: A class-leading turning circle of just 6.95 metres, making it the ultimate tool for navigating tight London side streets or narrow Parisian alleys.

  • Modern Utility: The inclusion of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, allowing the car to power external devices—a rare feature in the A-segment.

Expanding the Portfolio: The smart #6 EHD

The Global Brand Event wasn't solely focused on the compact segment. In a move to further diversify its lineup, smart also gave a world premiere to the smart #6 EHD, a premium fastback sedan designed exclusively for the Chinese market.

Inspired by the aerodynamic profile of a shark, the #6 EHD represents smart’s first foray into the executive fastback space. It pairs “executive-level spaciousness” with a sleek silhouette, proving that the brand is capable of scaling its premium EV DNA from the smallest city cars to large, long-distance cruisers. This expansion brings smart’s global product portfolio from three to five models this year alone.

A Global Strategy with European Soul

While the manufacturing and technological “muscle” is bolstered by its Chinese partnerships, smart maintains a heavy European influence. The vehicles are styled by Mercedes-Benz in Europe, and smart Europe GmbH remains responsible for the brand’s activities across the continent from its headquarters in Leinfelden-Echterdingen.

The brand’s rapid growth has already seen it enter 40 markets worldwide. To support this growing fleet, the company announced the launch of smart care, a dedicated customer service brand that will roll out across Europe starting in mid-2026.

Looking Ahead to Paris

The Concept #2 is a “concrete outlook,” but the wait for the real deal won't be long. Smart confirmed that the world premiere of the series-production model—the smart #2—is scheduled for the Paris Motor Show in October 2026.

For the automotive world, the return of the two-seater signifies a “Change of Perspectives” on what urban EVs should be. It suggests that while the industry has been obsessed with larger SUVs, there is still a vital, fashionable, and high-tech future for the car that started the micro-mobility revolution.

Visitors to Auto Beijing 2026 can see the Concept #2 and the #6 EHD at Booth E404 until late April.
