Humax and Harmony Automotive partner to bundle home EV charging with BYD sales

A new partnership between Humax EV Charging and Harmony Automotive aims to simplify one of the more persistent friction points in electric vehicle ownership: installing a home charger. The two companies have agreed an exclusive arrangement that allows customers purchasing a BYD electric vehicle through Harmony’s UK dealership network to bundle a home charging solution directly into the vehicle purchase package.

The initiative reflects a growing trend among automakers and retailers to present EV ownership as an integrated ecosystem rather than a standalone product. By combining vehicle finance with charging infrastructure, the partnership seeks to remove upfront cost barriers and streamline the transition to electric mobility.

Under the agreement, buyers—whether private motorists or fleet operators—can include a Humax MX7 home charger and standard installation within their Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or other financing arrangements. Pricing for the bundled package starts at £999, inclusive of installation, and is available immediately across all six Harmony Automotive showrooms in the UK.

Addressing a key barrier to EV adoption

While the UK’s EV market continues to expand, access to convenient home charging remains a critical factor influencing purchasing decisions. Public charging infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years, but for many drivers, particularly those outside major urban centres, home charging still represents the most reliable and cost-effective option.

However, installation costs—often running into several hundred pounds or more depending on property conditions—can deter buyers already facing the higher upfront cost of an electric vehicle. By integrating the charger into the vehicle finance package, the Humax–Harmony model effectively amortises that expense, spreading it over monthly payments.

This approach aligns with broader industry efforts to reduce perceived complexity around EV ownership. Rather than requiring customers to separately research, purchase and install charging equipment, dealerships can now offer a “one-stop-shop” solution at the point of sale.

Jeff Kim, president of Humax, framed the partnership as a response to precisely these challenges. He noted that integrating hardware and installation into the financing process allows customers to leave the showroom with a complete charging solution already arranged, eliminating uncertainty and additional administrative steps.

The role of dealerships in the EV ecosystem

Harmony Automotive, an authorised BYD dealership group in the UK, operates six showrooms and positions itself as a specialist in next-generation electric vehicles. Its collaboration with Humax highlights the evolving role of dealerships in the EV era.

Traditionally focused on vehicle sales, dealers are increasingly expected to provide guidance on charging infrastructure, energy tariffs and broader ownership considerations. This shift reflects the interconnected nature of EV technology, where the vehicle is only one component of a wider energy ecosystem.

Martyn Webb, chief business controller at Harmony Automotive, emphasised that customer experience is central to the initiative. By offering an integrated charging package, the dealership aims to reduce friction in the purchasing process and ensure that buyers can begin using their vehicles immediately without concerns about charging logistics.

For fleet buyers, the benefits may be particularly significant. Corporate customers often face additional complexity when deploying EVs, including infrastructure planning and cost management. A bundled solution that can be incorporated into financing arrangements may help streamline procurement and reduce administrative overhead.

The Humax MX7: features and positioning

At the centre of the partnership is the Humax MX7 home charger, positioned as a premium product with a strong emphasis on future-proofing and smart functionality. The unit was recognised with a Gold award at the 2025 London Design Awards, underscoring its design credentials as well as its technical capabilities.

Among its key features is energy theft protection, enabled through smart vehicle recognition technology. This is designed to prevent unauthorised use of the charger—an increasingly relevant consideration as EV adoption grows and home charging points become more common in shared or semi-public spaces.

The MX7 is also compatible with the UK Government’s Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) grant scheme, potentially reducing upfront costs for eligible customers. While grant availability has fluctuated in recent years, inclusion in the scheme remains an important selling point in the UK market.

From a technical standpoint, the charger is ISO 15118-ready, meaning it is prepared for future Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functionality as the technology matures. V2G capability would allow EVs to feed electricity back into the grid or a home, supporting energy balancing and potentially generating revenue for vehicle owners.

Solar compatibility is another notable feature, enabling integration with domestic photovoltaic systems. This allows users to charge their vehicles using renewable energy generated on-site, reducing both carbon emissions and electricity costs.

The accompanying Humax Smart App provides control over charging schedules, real-time usage monitoring and an “Auto Solar Mode”, which optimises charging based on solar generation. Such features are increasingly expected in the premium home charging segment, where consumers are looking for intelligent energy management rather than simple plug-and-charge functionality.

Finally, the MX7 is backed by a five-year warranty and 24/7 UK-based customer support, positioning it as a high-reliability option in a market where aftersales service can vary significantly between providers.

Market implications and competitive context

The Humax–Harmony partnership reflects a broader shift in how EV-related products are marketed and sold. As competition intensifies among both automakers and charging hardware providers, differentiation is increasingly being achieved through ecosystem integration rather than standalone product features.

Several manufacturers have already experimented with bundling charging solutions into vehicle purchases, but the degree of integration varies. Some offer discounted chargers or installation services, while others provide more comprehensive packages that include energy tariffs or smart home integration.

What distinguishes this particular initiative is the direct inclusion of the charger and installation within the financing structure of the vehicle purchase. This not only simplifies the transaction for the customer but also aligns incentives across the supply chain, from manufacturer to dealership to charging provider.

For BYD, which continues to expand its presence in the UK market, the partnership offers an additional value proposition that may help attract new customers. As a relatively recent entrant compared with established European brands, BYD has focused on competitive pricing and advanced battery technology. Enhancing the ownership experience through integrated charging solutions could further strengthen its appeal.

From Humax’s perspective, the collaboration provides a direct route to market via dealership networks, potentially accelerating adoption of its products. As the home charging market becomes more crowded, partnerships with automotive retailers may prove to be a key distribution strategy.

Consumer benefits and potential challenges

For consumers, the primary advantages of the bundled approach are convenience and financial flexibility. By eliminating the need for a separate charger purchase and installation process, the partnership reduces both the time and effort required to transition to an EV.

Spreading the cost over monthly payments may also make premium charging solutions more accessible, particularly for buyers who might otherwise opt for lower-cost alternatives or delay installation altogether.

However, there are potential considerations to bear in mind. The “standard installation” included in the £999 starting price may not cover all scenarios, particularly for properties requiring more complex electrical work. Customers will need to understand what is included in the package and any additional costs that may arise.

There is also the question of choice. Bundled solutions can sometimes limit flexibility, as customers may be tied to a specific charger model or provider. While the Humax MX7 offers a comprehensive feature set, some buyers may prefer alternative products or installation arrangements.

A step towards a more integrated EV future

Despite these considerations, the partnership between Humax EV Charging and Harmony Automotive represents a notable step towards a more integrated EV ownership model in the UK. By addressing one of the key practical barriers to adoption—home charging installation—it has the potential to make electric vehicles more accessible to a wider audience.

As the EV market continues to mature, such collaborations are likely to become increasingly common. The challenge for industry players will be to balance integration with flexibility, ensuring that consumers benefit from convenience without sacrificing choice.

For now, the Humax–Harmony initiative offers a clear signal of the direction of travel: a future in which buying an electric vehicle is not just about selecting a car, but about entering a seamlessly connected energy ecosystem from day one.
